New Wilton vice, using a Lincoln cracker box to weld. I need to weld the vice together where they are made to turn/rotate, I guess you would call it the turn table portion of the vice. In total I have 9 vices to do, 2 of which are new. What stick can I buy to do this?
Reply:The rod I have used to weld several vices back together is called a butter rod. It is a root pass cast iron rod. It works well on any cast, iron or steel. I use UTP 85FN but any make will do. You may have to take it to a welding shop as these rods are to be used with DC current.
Reply:If you're just trying to keep the vice from rotating in the base, why not just drill through the body and lock it with a capscrew? Then if you needed to use the swivel feature you could remove the screw.Matt
Reply:Pics are a requirement here.My name's not Jim....
Reply:Drilling and bolting sounds like the cheaper option. These vices are used in a wire rope splicing company. We have wornout the lockbolts on several vices by tugging/pulling thimbles open/close etc. I need get them all welded or bolted. anyways thanks for info on the rods
Reply:EEEYYOOWW,Now my fingers just started to hurt... Bad!In the future I'd look into buying fast acting drill press vices with no swivel base, as these wear out.Matt
