Reply:I can't take credit for the design, I got the plans off the web. If anyone is interested the web addy is www.gottrikes.com . The paint was actually selected by the wife. She made the trip to the store, she got to pick the color. It's just rustoleum orange but I was amazed at how well it matched the color of the jack. I probably would have chose blue.... FORD blue! Thanks for your kind words, this site keeps me motivated

Reply:verry cool.i'm planing one of them soon as well, i plan on using an air powerd jack though and will use the jack for a log spliter plan also so it will be interchangable. at $90 a pop for the jack i figure i better get as much use as i can out of it. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:Great job...I just finished cutting all my frame pieces for my bender yesterday. One question...my flat bar that I got is 3" instead of 2 1/2" as the plans call for. Do you think 3" would work or should I go ahead and cut it down? Also, did you drill your holes or have them drilled?MM175 MIGCutmaster 38 PlasmaCraftsman 30gal compressor4x6 HF bandsaw1hp HF floor drill pressRyobi Cutoff SawAssorted grindersNot enough time

Reply:Great looking bender, where'd you score your dies from?
Reply:Originally Posted by PJ1I think you could use the 3" for the die puller you would just adjust the extra 1/2" to the front. If I had to do another one I think I would use 3/16" square tube as it would make the drill press work much easier, The 7/8" holes are very close to wall of the 1/4" wall tube as you drill and the bit tries to walk. Start with a small pilot hole and work up to to size. The only work i couldn't do was the 1" holes, had a local guy do it.thnx PJ
Reply:Got one of those in the works as well. Im gonna make a new plate for the bottom of my air/hyd jack. Ill let you all know how it works out. All pieces are cut and drilled. I still need to order the die set. Reply:The shoes that the bender uses are all made for pro-tools mechanical bender, www.pro-tools.com . I have kinda done the math on the forces generated by the hydraulic jack and can say that 3/16" material would still be way more than required. The shoes I bought first are 1 1/2" with a 4 1/2" radius, I wish I had known to buy the 240* shoes in order to bend a full 180* and more. I believe that the HD bender plans call for the pro-tools 105B dies. I ordered the regular 105 dies and they work ok. I think the difference may be that the bottom shoe for the 105B is wider. Either way if you order dies get the 240* versions

Reply:Just curious, how much did the entire project set you back without dies? I'm tossing up just making one, or picking up a JD2. The only thing I don't like about the proform bender or benders that use their dies, are they they're priced comparatively high.
Reply:The thing I didn't like about the mechanical benders was that they had to be mounted solid to the floor. A friend of mine has one and it takes some biceps to bend large tubing, it's not as easy as the guy in the video makes it look. I wanted to be able to throw it in the truck and take it to other locations, although it is very heavy and it would take 2 well fed guys to get it in a pickup. The cost I guess is around $450 not including consumables etc with 1 set of shoes.
Reply:i'm going to make an atempt at fabricating my own dies, first with wood backed in steel then if it works and i can get some $$ comming in i'll buy a small metal lath and make some the right way.seems like you could make them a lot cheaper than they sell them for. summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.

Reply:Hey guys,I got the JD2 Model 4 bender with the 14inch Enerpac cylinder and air/hydraulic pump. After using it I can tell you what I don't like and that might be of some help in deciding what to buy or how to make yours. I bought the JD2 because of price compared to the RMD benders. Ugh. If only I spent some more money. But here is my one complaint: The JD2 type of bender is set up so that the material you are bending is stuck inside the bending arms. This means you have to pull pins and wrestle with the material to get your piece out after you bend it. Sure, after the first bend you can slide the piece out, but make a compound bend and you are gonna be stuck pulling pins. Ok, for me, I don't do a ton of bending so I have accepted the pain in the arse. But the RMD style has the material on top and when you retract the cylinder the material just lifts straight up and out. If you are on a budget, you are probably gonna do what I did and save some money, or build it yourself and probably use the same type of setup with pins. But if you can find plans to build an RMD type of setup....GO FOR IT! You will be much happier for the saved hassle. And not to hijack the thread like I tend to do.....AWESOME PROJECT! NICE JOB! Reply:Thnx DGB, the dies come from www.pro-tools.com . They have pipe, tube and square dies available, you can also request them in a 240* version that alows a 180* bend. Reply:i have the ram on mine with the motor on the right side if you stand behind the bender and it works .weather you go 90 or 45 you will need to make the part the motor has mm threads .what i did was tighten the motor fitting and put a mark on it so i new were it stopped at then took it off the ram and removed the fitting from the motor cut it in half took a hyd.45elbow and welded the halves to it making sure wen in was back on the motor would be up rightChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder

Reply:if i rember ill post a pic after workthis the ram i wanted http://www.mydiscounttools.com/show_Product.asp?ID=1350this is what i got thats why i had to 45 the fittinghttp://www2.northerntool.com/product-1/941216.htmwith the first one you need to put a small knoch in the frame by the ram base and may be turn the mount tabs on the cyl 90deg but im not sureChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:Hmm, Ive got the northern tool one as well. Ok then, so just rotating base 90 deg isnt going to work as well as I thought. To much stick out maybe? Im going to start tacking up soon so Ill start trial fitting the jack in to see whats what. I thought that pulling the jack handle insert would give me enough room to clear without doing any structural mods.Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.

Reply:Chopper: have you added any oil to the jack? If you lay it over you will need to add oil to it to make it work in that position. Thats all i did to mine and it works very well...

Reply:i just picked up my jack today and was looking at the fitting from the air power section ???? i thought it would just be a air fitting i needed to offcet 45% but it looks like a hydrolic pump point ?? what did you use to ofcet it ?? am i over thinking this ??? summer is here, plant a tree for mother earth. if you dont have time or space, sponcer some one else to plant one for you.feel free to shoot me a PM or e-mail me at [email][email protected] i got lots of time.
Reply:i have about 4 uses for the ram as i'll be interchanging it as the power force for several things and cant aford to screw it up, you know me always broke so i gotta get it right. it and a small wood lath were my tax return $$ well the part of it the wife let me have.
