I have got a gsxr 750 motor that I want to put into a buggy. I am looking for at least a foot of suspension travel. I have been trying to figure out how to do the rear suspension. WOIuld it be better to mount the motor right behind the seat in the buggy and then run a "swingarm" off the back of the frame for travel, or should I figure out how to make a little differential with some halfshafts (running off the chain sprocket of the motor) and then halfshafts going into the wheels. So that would mean indivdual a-arms for each side. Anyone have some ideas for me?? This is my next project, I will probly use 1" or 1.25" DOM for the chassis.HTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.
Reply:look at the ST-2 Plans....those are designed just for the kind of engine you got and are already tested. www.badlandbuggy.comIf you want to go really deep on this stuff you should look at Rorty designs, those are some Bad aS$ buggies. http://www.rorty-design.com/content/...esign_home.htmAnd no, you don´t need a diferential if you´re planning on using it on grass, mud and offroad terrain. Of course you will need to use some CV joints if you want to have suspension, swing arms (separated) or A arms.If you want to have just 1 swingarm and make it pivot from the rear of the buggy, that´s easier to make but you will loose handling ability and suspension will not work as good as a individual A arm. it all depends on how much do you want to spend, how much time you got, and what tools can you get access towww.minibuggy.net is a nice site to see.My Babies: HF Drill pressHF Pipe Bender3   4.5" Black and Decker angle grindersLincoln Electric PROMIG 175that´s it!
Reply:So your saying to get a live axle with some half shafts off each end? It owuld be for sand mainly maybe some dirt.HTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.
Reply:For "sand and maybe some dirt" I personally would use a single swing arm.  I am a loyal subsriber to the KISS principal.  The less little parts and things you have, the less breakage you are likely to have.  A LOT of 4 wheelers (some call them quads or quadbikes) have a single swingarm in the rear, with a single coilover shock on top of the swingarm.  Often solid axel with no CV joints.  Makes for easy fab, and easy repair.Contact me for any metal polishing needs you may have, my avatar is a pic of a standard, painted fire axe that I ground, sanded polished and buffed to a mirror finish.
Reply:Only problem I see for a solid rear axle is the flex issue. GSXR's are chain drive. If your axle twists, then the chain will twist(BAD) or, it will derail(BAD) You might think about a solid axle center mounted in line, and use CV's. If you do a Ducati-esque swingarm, like a quad, the width may leverage against the swingarm and housing, causing some big problems with binding. I am guessing this wil be a good bit wider than a quad, that is why I don't think a swingarm center is the way to go.And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
