Hi I have a 250 amp ac/dc sears craftsman arc welder and I am using 6013 I just got 7018 because I want to learn different rods but for some reason it sticks to my work and I would like to know what I can do to stop this but I think it might just be lack of expirence.
Reply:Whats the rod diam? What polarity and amperage are you running? 7018 does stick more for me than 6011 (the only other rod I have used). But it requires more amperage for me too.axehindLast edited by axehind; 04-02-2004 at 03:27 PM.
Reply:well I have tried alot of different amerages with no sucess and the 6013 is 1/8 and the 7013 is 3/32 and 1/8. I have both tried ac and dc and they both stick
Reply:I usually run 1/8 7018 at around 110-115 amps (DC+) on 3/16 steel. And I have 3/32 7018 at around 90 amps. Have your electrode already moving before it touches the steel. I had the same problem as you when I first started. 7018 was my first rod and it took me a hour to get it to not stick. And even now it sometimes sticks. Also your amperage might be low for the size rod your using. Had that problem too when I started. I havent tried 6013 but 6011 is much easier to get going and requires less amps than 7018. Also restarting the arc on 7018 can be a pain.axehind

Reply:Yes like striking a match. Well said! I've heard of the "tap starting" process but I dont think it will work with 7018. Least I was never able to get it too tap start with 7018 but I was able to with 6011. You can make some pretty nice looking welds with 7018. Let us know how you make out.axehind
Reply:Before you "tap start" take the tip with your gloved left thumb and forefinger. Snap off the encrusted flux. The other way is to scratch the tip of the rod on the concrete floor. You have to be quite agressive when you strike up a 7018.
