I have not been to any schooling for welding. All my experiance is on the job. i have been welding for 8 years now, and any time i have had to weld stainless to carbon steel i was tought to use 309 filler. i was just told by someone today that it is ok to use 316L filler when im welding stailess to carbon. is that ok?? what do the books say. im to lazy to research my self plus i dont really have time.i do understand u shouldnt use 309 on 316 or 308 so on.... i am welding carbon to 316 stainless. thanks for your time and help.
Reply:309 is the proper filler for joining s.s. to carbon steel. Hell the welding test I did this summer was 309 filler to a106 pipe. That qualified me for tigging stainless and carbon. Straps bent just as a normal test would
Reply:Do a seach here on that subject, it has been covered several times in depth. Basically/generally, 309 has a chemistry to allow dilution with CS and still solidify as ductile, non-hardenable, austenite, in contrast to the use of other SS fillers such as 308 or 316 which may result in a diluted weld chemistry that solidifies as hard and brittle martensite, depending on the exent of dilution and the alloy content of the carbon steel and the cooling rate.
Reply:308 blends very easily with carbon but I have not heard anyone recommend using 316.UA Local 598
Reply:done a **** pot of this using 316 wire, 100% x-ray never had a problem (cheap contractor wouldn't spring for 309) but pulser and slim are right, 309l should be used |
