I've been welding for about 6 months on the job now, and this has by far been my favorite project so far.  It is a curved stairway.  We didn't bend the steel for the job but I did all the set up, measuring, and welding.  Very fun project for a newb!I have learned a lot so far, I will have more pics to come, my welds are starting to really look nice, and the acess to kick *** equipment doesn't hurt either.I know it's not much, but I've been welding for around 8 months altogether and only 6 on the job so Im really excited about how this turned out.  The homeowner and the homebuilder both loved it as well and even asked me how many of them I've done lol.  They were suprised when I told them it was my first.
Reply:awesome, what method  is used on stairs and rails like that?
Reply:Looks good.  Tell us more if you can?    JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:Very nice! Can you take a wide view pic so we can see it all ?John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Well basically we showed the blueprints to a metal company in Denver (not sure where we get our metal) and they bent the channel and the railings. Then we tacked angle iron between the ends and in the middle of the stringers.  We kept it held in the air with an overhead winch.  Then I tacked a bunch of scrap bar up along the outside of the stringers plumb and clamped the lower and upper rails to it.  Then I measured for how long the lower legs needed to be, and my picket size, cut away, tack them all in place checking to make sure everything is still plumb (installing braces/straps) about every 3-5 pickets.  I welded it all up with a Millermatic 210.  This was really fun.  The stairs are being cut on our plasma table (they haven't taught me that one yet lol) and bent in our shop.  Just found out today that they never got these blue prints approved by the state and even we built them exactly how they were engineered, no stamp, no stairs.   We have to take it apart again and start from scratch with new blueprints lol.  That was an expensive mistake on their part, we're getting paid to build these twice and another set that is similar.
Reply:Hahaha Too funny, now i feel better now i know that sort of thing does happen pretty much everywhere, always gotta do it twice! beautiful work by the way, id like to know the method they bent the channel with.Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
Reply:I'm not sure on how they bent the channel but it turned out great, no kinks and it has a nice sturdy radius all the way down, almost like it was cast that way.  I thoroughly enjoyed building it so I'm not mad we have to do it all over again lol.  I get paid the same.  I'll try to get some pics of my welds as I've gotten a lot better at welding since I first came to this board.  It really does just take practice.
