Have a small job i have to do for work on a grinder stand. It has a cast base with a steel tube mast. I have had to weld these two together before i know it is not a simple weld i was wondering what filler i should use if should preheat or any other tips you guys may have. Your information will be appreciated. Thank youmillermatic 210syncrowave 180 SDhypertherm 380craftsman buzzboxclarke drill press/bandsaw
Reply:Use a nickel rod, preheat with a torch and let it cool as slowly as possible, I find that burrying it in sand really slows down the cooling proccess which prevents cracking, I'm sure there are easier, cleaner ways to slow cool something, but I had a lot of sand at the construction site where I welded my las cast.
Reply:I would do a spark test and make sure its Cast IRON, not cast steel. If its cast Iron, all you can do is grind, preheat to 4 or 5 hundred degrees and weld it with NI 55.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Nickel Rod, preheat to at least 4-5 hundred degrees, weld an inch then peen, weld an inch then peen. Best way to slow cool is in an oven but if not availiable use sand or kitty litter. --Gol'
Reply:ductape and superglue that thing... hehehehehe. go with what these other guys are saying, or you could just make your own stand if you wanted to. make it a little stronger, stiffer, stable, and put a shelf or a quench bucket handle on it.Later,Andy
