So I'm new to welding and would like to get a nice reliable MIG that will be reliable and up to the job(I plan on welding sheet metal, go-kart frames, etc. small items) So I was wondering how large a mig I will need. I have been looking at the Hobart Handler 125 and handler 140, Would that be large enough? Also how about HF migs? I'm afraid they'd be unreliable if not too small...THANKS!
Reply:the hobart 140 is a nice mig to start out with, you can get it from northern tools..
Reply:If all you want to do is 1/8" and less, then the 140 is a nice machine. The problem is you will most likely quickly out grow it if you enjoy welding and want to move on to larger projects. A 220v machine in the 180 to 200 amp class is a better over all choice.Rather than rehash topics that have been covered to death,  take a bit and read thru a bunch of the threads linked in these two stickies. They have a number of threads that discuss the pros and cons on various starter migs and will give you a better understanding of what might be best for you.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=20883http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43760.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I don't why anybody would buy less than a 140 class machine if they could. Not everybody has the option of a small 240 volt machine but if you do you won't regret it. I consider anything smaller than a 140 class a sheet metal only machine. Sure they might do a little more but the duty cycle will be painfully short.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
