Reply:drop either leg- don't matter120v 3- wires= Hot, Neutral Ground 240v 3 wires = Hot, Hot, GroundProblemo is that a 240v Circuit no hava da Neutral so unless the machine can sense the voltage inside a simple adapter no workieEd Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:I have seen the 110 run off Hot and Neutral with the Neutral bar being ground off. (can't say as to it's safety)My 240 to 110 is a four pole 240 to a three pole 110. it is an extension cord that has converts the 240 off of my generator to 4 - 110v plugs. Very handy.

Reply:Most (all?) electrical distribution boxes have a bar where all the neutrals and grounds are tied together. As long as the ground wire is the same gauge as the hot line, I don't see a physical problem with doing it with 1 hot leg and the ground. There may be some electrical code violations, but half the wiring in my shop would have to be hidden from an inspector....Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma

Reply:Originally Posted by romanianbusinessmanPersonally I don't see any reason why the OP couldn't safely drop either L1 or L2 and use the ground as the neutral. The only safety issue would be in the actual method by which he would isolate the unused wire, maybe he could remove the bridge from the circuit breaker and switch off the breaker which corresponds with the respective line he is using.
Reply:Thanks guys! Some useful information. My Grandpa used to do the same with his 220.He'd have two female ends(boxs) on the end of his supply cord, one for his grinder/drill and the other for his buzz box.I just never learned how he accomplished it.Looks like an interesting sight.I'll be back!
