copper?

i want to make a fountain out of some sheet copper.  what would be the best way to make a tub and weld it.. could i just sweat the seam or would i have to braze it..  also do you think the copper would rust if i put a clear coat on ..  tony
Reply:TIG would be good for welding - sweating would work but you wll probably see the solder at some point.  Copper doesn't rust but it does develop patinas from brown to green.  You could try to clear coat it or let it color naturally.Get it hot and hit it hard...
Reply:You can TIG weld copper fairly easily and you can use a bare peice of solid electrical wire as filler rod.  I use anywhere from 16ga to 10ga for a filler depending on my base metal thickness.

Reply:When using electrical wire for filler, be sure to use GOOD wire. Some classes of wire have high allowable ammounts of aluminum and other contaminant. Try a test part with the filler first.You can braze if you want. Not difficult. I'v silver soldered and brazed a lot of copper over the years.If you sweat the joints with soft solder, you MUST have a good mechanical joint (like a pittsburgh seam) first. If the joint sees ANY tension, it will fail.
