How many of you guys still use conventional welding helmets Vs auto?I still use my 20+ year old jackson with a #11 gold lens, & love it.  I have an auto helmet, but I never use it.  I may break it out again some day, but I really like gold lenses.  Do they make any autos with gold lenses.Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:Hi there.I'm a gold lens fan also, have all gold from 9 to 13 in my toolbox.--------------------------------------------------------------www.becmotors.nlyup, I quit welding.. joined welder anonymous
Reply:I actually can't vote, I use two kinds of helmets, neither are listed here.  The first is 'accu-strike', which is a chin operated welding helmet.  The other has a adjustable visor over the eyes that you can work manually with your hands.  I have been using the manual helmet more frequently recently as I can get my 'over the neck' ear muffs under that helmet and I can wear my respirator.Miller 330 a/bp water cooledI believe in gun control, I hold my gun with two hands.  If you want to know why, click here.Buy American or bye America.

Reply:I have them both. I have a jackson nexgen autodark, and a jackson gold lens. I find my self using my golds lens fixed shade at work. I took the nexgen a few times to work, but working around large items/ using fluxcore all the time i perfer the fixedshade because im too afraid to break my nexgen. I love my nexgen though and use it alot for tig work.Ya gotta spend money to make money!
Reply:I have two passive Lincolns and two auto darks. Since I still lose my starting place when i nod to get the passive down. I went to the auto dark makes it easier for me to weld
Reply:Okay, I'll tell on myself.  What the hell.JUST THE OTHER DAY, I forgot my damn hood, which I was used to always being in the back on the truck.  It was a "small" job, you know, just welding the brackets onto the inside of a big steel ring that was going to hold the fire pit that I had welded up in the shop.Dark glasses, eyes closed, three brackets, 15" of weld total.  Helluva tan.But for the poll, I'm a firm believer in the value of an autodarkening hood.  I learned how to weld with the traditional hood (though with a nice gold lens) but especially for wire processes in a typical shop, the auto really keeps up the productivity.  And because it stays UV-protective even when clear, you are also protected from other arcs if you weld near other welders.  OF COURSE, this isn't as valuable if you are always wearing your clear safety glasses under the hood, as you should be!
Reply:I learned with the old school nod and burn hood , a Sellstrom with gold lens, but currently use a Miller elite auto. My Miller is my go to hood, but I keep my Sellstrom around for back up. Technology has a way of letting you down when you least need it to.My toys:Mobile Set Up    Miller Bobcat 225NT    Oxy Acetylene cutting set up    Red D Arc 12VS wire feeder    Spoolmate 3035 spoolgun     Scratch Start TIG DCMiller Elite auto hood

Reply:I used an old jackson for years, Well when it took a crap on me I bought another. Ran into a project that was tacking 1/4X1" Flatbar over and over and over(storm drains). My neck was killing me, the nexy day I went and bought a miller auto darking hood. It gets used in the shop, The jackson gets used in the field. Sometimes it will not darken outside. So BOTH!
Reply:I cut it down, got tired of being choked when I was in a tight spot.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:I was using both on the same job yesterday. My Speedglas can't be manually turned off, and it's always a shade three. I use a standard flip-lense hood for grinding and cutting, and the gold filter in it still does a fine job when I need it. So I didn't vote. Not using a hood, is not an option.City of L.A. Reply:Iswore off auto darks for years because the ones I used had no adjustments for sensitivity or delay time. I kept getting blinded by a white hot tungsten because the old autos would shut off when the arc was stopped. Now I use a Miller Elite exclusively because the technology caught up with my needs. IMHO the Miller Elite has the clearest viewing area that I have ever seen."ALL DAMAGE, NO CONTROL"

Reply:I can't vote. I use both. I don't weld much anymore but it depends on what I'm doing. Lots of tacks and stops and starts and I use the AD. Lots of steady welding and I put on the big window Jackson with a #10 lens. I used an ordinary Jackson with a Lincoln lens for many, many years. Tried other lenses but I could see better with the LIncoln. I finally went to a big window hood when I started wearing progressive bifocals.. Threw the regular hood and cheater away. I never did learn to like the cheaters after I had to use one. If I had to use only one hood I would go with the old fixed shade. Old habits die hard I guess.
