Had to rebuild the bearing seat bores in a couple of rubber coated rollers..2 diffrent size bearings go into the bores..Beat up bore..Welding the bore..And as it gets hotter..The rubber gives in..Yuck..I hate when that happens.. I get all the fun jobs..I'm zap and I approve this message.....zap!Last edited by zapster; 01-07-2008 at 05:18 PM.I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Zap, Thanks for the pics. What's that square and ring in pic 3, some sort of a chicken-man finger saver?? Hey Zap, In the Site Leader spirit, of promoting conversation, mind if we talk about portables for a minute?Tozzi, Thanks for the link, I watched the video. I know a man who does portable weld and bore work. His equipment is all shop built, very accurate, and sets up fast. He cuts some huge bores with it.Instead of the centering cones, he has a few other tricks and tries to pick up off the least worn part of the bore. Once center is found, he welds on brackets that hold flange bearings. The bar(s) turn in the flange bearings, which stay in place for the whole job; insuring accurate centering. He has several drive systems, depending on the job, one is a big mag-drill with a chain coupler turning the bar. To minimize micrometer work, he's built cutter bit indexing tools for the common sizes. I have used the setup myself, but right now there are two details I can't recall; how the bar feeds through the bearings, and how exactly the feed is powered. Maybe there's a hex drive involved too, but you get the idea. Next time he does a job I'll take some pics. So, if someone wants to try it, we'd love to see it; set it up with your mag-drill to start. I'm sure Zap could probably recommend the ideal bars and cutters.Although, if the prices in the video include everything -ready to go- it sounds like a deal really. You have to remember, my friend started tooling up long ago; when portables were nowhere near that practical or cheap. Now he probably sees no need to switch.

Reply:Zap, how did the project turn out in the end? Curious, as to the results with melting. I noticed that you welded around the bore any specific reason for this. Over the years, I have had my share of welding bores, to be machined and have found that hand welding really sucks. Your welds look like they would clean up nice. I will start another thread on bore weld machines. I have some questions.
