I'm currently taking a Level C welding course in BC, and want to move down to the states after school. Does anyone know of anyone whos done this? I've talked to two immigration lawyers and they've made it sound quite challenging. My only hopes are through an employer sponsoring me. Any ideas?

Reply:I have no idea why you would think that the grass is greener South. It is difficult to wetback unlike twenty years ago. If you are caught it could be a good while in jail before you are deposited back in Canada. Break your leg and if you have no medical it could cost you your life savings. There is a good amount of work in Western Canada if you are willing. Another way is if you are any good to work on your pressure tickets after you have your C then join boilermakers or other large union. Often they send people across the line on permit.Last idea is if you are native the border does not exist and you can cross it without any restraint.
Reply:Interesting. The second flow chart helps a lot. I looked up some info about the path I took on the chart and I now have a pretty solid plan on getting a green card via employer sponsorship. I'm not sure if I made it clear in the beginning, but there is no way I'd try to illegally immigrate.Just in case any Canadians were wondering, all 3 of the unions I've been looking at give you and your family health coverage. Thanks everyone!

Our state and city governments don't care if they're here legally or not, neither does our federal gov't. There really is no point in them trying to come in and do it legally when they can just walk right in and do whatever they want illegally with very little problem. From all the various labor type jobs I've worked in my life time, I've personally known many illegals who have lived and worked here for years without much problem. It really is a complete travesty of justice, a big slap in the face to anyone who takes the time immigrate legally, and a big kick in the *** to those of us who are here by birthright.
Reply:Find out about joining the military if you are under 30 and reasonably fit. It beats civilian life, is a better career path (with MANY options and 4 years of college for free afterwards) than most civilian jobs, and you can retire with benefits after 20 years. Been there, done that, got many T-shirts.Yes, there's a war on. but the casualty rate is microscopic compared to previous wars so your odds are extremely good. The Navy is an option if you don't like the sandbox, they have great welding schools, but don't pick any specialty that can be put to use anywhere but on a ship. (One of our welding instructors was Damage Control (dunno the formal Navy title for that) and ended up doing combat engineering with Marine units in Iraq. Still has PTS.)There is no reason not to go that way if it's an option, and it's been a common route to earning citizenship for many, many years.
Reply:I dont understand why the states would be so appealing versus canada? Free health care, and you cant tell me that the wages arent compareable. Theirs tons of work across canada, pipeline, hydro plants, nuclear plants. I dont know i personally love being canadian, i make 150,000 a year as a high pressure welder for a hydro electric dam, i have more benefits than i can count. Canada rocks dude.

Reply:Wasn't generalizing. Was speaking to a specific type. The type that expect the MTV life to just fall out of the sky. The type that can't stand The Joneses having more stuff then them. The ones that drive f350 or GM 3500, duallies to the office and have no use for them. I just find it funny that so many American'ts complain about "illegals" yet they are a very large part of the economy. I'm not throwing a bucket full of stones all Americans. Those that I'm tossing pebbles at, let themselves be known through their ignorant rhetoric, disguised as "patriotism". Any how, this isn't what this thread is for or the forum section for this discussion. So lets not get someone's thread closed.200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:Alfred mentioned that he's sure glad to be driving a 450.
Reply:The mexicans used to come here to kentucky to work in the tobacco fields to help plant, harvest etc.Since the goverment got involved and bought all the smaller tobacco farmers quota's up,because the goverment wants to set up big tobacco farms for their selves and cut the small farmer out, their is no tobacco to work in no more, but we still have the mexicans here. They still show up here,to do what I don't know. Now we got mexicans walking up and down rural country roads looking for work that's not there.Just the other morning, coming home,I think it was 9:30 am,car upside down in fence row,3 volunteer firefighters stopping people and asking who's car it was and where was they, got closer to home and there walking down the side of the road was 3 mexicans with one of them packing a case of beer, already drunk at 9:30 in the morning, just abandoned their car, could have killed some one, something needs to be done,I could go on with all the stealing and what not going on around here but I won't.Maxus Pro-125 MigChicago Electric 90 amp DC flux-coreLincoln Electric AC 225 tombstoneO/A torchM/O mini-torch10 acres of flatland15 acres of holler
Reply:Hey Denrep, I'm glad I drive an F250!I do agree with Bert, the Canadians should stay there!!!Sorry, couldn't resist.
Reply:I have no problem with our neighbors, they're welcome to com'on down anytime.Or they can stay home, still no problem. Or... if as BtW suggested, they want to send just their money, that's fine too.So come on down Claytonl. See what those of us who didn't dodge the draft are like. By the way, I like folks to buy new heavy trucks and hardly ever use ‘em.For us tightwads who won't buy a new truck, it keeps the pipeline full of bargains on nice fresh used work trucks.Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 11-23-2010 at 07:05 PM.
Reply:I've been asked quite a bunch so here goes,In America you can buy things at a reasonable price, buy things without being taxed like crazy (some states don't even have a sales tax), own firearms without insane restrictions and registration and use them for self defense (which IS a good thing). Also, I've gone to music school so I can't pretend I don't listen to exclusively American music and American styles of music being played by Canadian musicians. As far as all Americans being superficial and broke because of it, thats insane. I've lived in Toronto and Vancouver and I can honestly say thats just the way most people are. The wages I've seen in Canada have been higher, but theres no price for freedom. Basically, I love America and way they choose to live. It feels like home when I'm down there.
Reply:I just spoke with a recruiter about joining the army. I need a green card before I can join, but unfortunately they don't sponsor anyone for a green card.

Reply:Geez, sorta like American draft dodgers back in the 70's who flocked into Canada illegally to save their butts from Vietnam. Same s*it, different pot.....
