so i just started at a new diesel shop working as a mechanic. the boss has four welders two of which are on service trucks and two in the shop. one of the shop welders happens to be a miller trailblazer 251. it hasnt run in about four years(im guessing by what the other mechanics tell me) and nobody knows why it doesnt run. it only has 2030 hours on it. is that alot? how much do these things go for used? already did a search on here and craigslist. nothing.
Reply:If you post the serial number, we can tell you what year it was made.  If you do some fooling around with it and see what it will or will not do as far as starting, running and welder/genny output in it's different operating modes, some of the experienced welder mechanics/rebuilders here may be able to give you indea of what might be wrong with it.  Simply telling us it's this or that kinda machine, which doesn't run, doesn't tell us anything and provides no clue at all as to what's wrong with it, how to fix it, or what it may be worth.  If anything, it has some scrap value at the metal recyclers or maybe some 'junkyard' parts value to someone who is rebuilding a similar machine. Interesting that you guys are all mechanics and no one has spent time fiddling with it....MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:In good physical and mechanical condition, it would probly go for around $1500 here.  The 2000+ hours would keep it from selling in the $2000 range like it would if it had say half or 2/3 less hours.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:thanks desert.
Reply:update.the boss gave me the go ahead on troubleshooting the trailblazer. i made a few basic checks, made sure all my fluids were good to go.turned the flexplate using a prybar to make sure it turned over ok.surprisingly it was really smooth.it wouldnt crank over with the starter switch, so i jumped the starter to see if it still worked.BAM! it cranked like a somabitc#!so automatically i figured it had to be something in the wiring. so i wiggled a few wires for looseness and one falls apart from corrosion!i repair it, turn the starter switch and........wala! ITS ALIVE! strong motor runs perfect! didnt get a chance to weld with it though. let u guys know tomorrow how it goes.oh, by the way, the jefe had a smile from ear to ear! hahaha! he wants to put it in the new service truck tomorrow! this feels good man..........
Reply:fired up the welder today again and welded some one inch square tubing 1/8" thick corner to corner with some 7018 at about 110. worked like a charm.
Reply:Shoulda told him is can't be fixed and you'll be happy to bring him the $300.00 from the scrapyard!!!"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"

Reply:I think my 251 is the greatest think since sliced bread. I was real doubtfull of an air cooled gas drive when I rented it when we were runing a 100 miles in which ever direction assembling bank vaults. I knew I didn't want to run the truck a couple hundred miles a day so I rented the trailblazer at first so the pickup was big enough. Runs wire like a dream.

Reply:Thats not alot of hours at all if it was taken care of most of its life it should give you about ten thousand hours again servicing regularly unless it was used for gouging all of its lifeHobart mega arc 250 Airco dipstick160 air liquide cutting torches arc air gouger and so many more goodiesIf you cant dazzle them with brillants baffle them with bullsh$t

Reply:You sure have it crammed tight in there.  With so much stuff packed tight around the engine, that would overheat here in the desert in summer.  I mounted mine a sliding frame.  I pull it out to the end of the truck bed for use, where there is less stuff so tight against it.  Slid all the way forward for travel keeps some of the weight off the rear axle, which is already over loaded.Last edited by DesertRider33; 11-25-2010 at 02:22 PM.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:actually theres about a foot of room between the compressor and the motor. enough space for someone to walk through for whatever reason. and its a single cab f450, so its pretty far forward to distribute the load. its a big welder so we had to scoot it over to the passenger side as much as we could. but your a keen observer desertrider33, i didnt think about that. thanks.
