I found this old wheel and would like to make an end table by attaching a leg and base. is there anything i need to do to the rusty metal (not sure if its iron or steel or something else) in order to weld it to a steel leg?thanks!
Reply:A pic of the wheel would help so maybe someone can tell if it's cast iron or cast steel. Sometimes it takes a touch of the grinder to tell the difference. If it's cast iron it will be difficult to weld it to malleable iron good enough so it will hold good.                                                   HTH,                                                            MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:+2 on a pic being a big help. Depends on what the metal is. Wire brush off as much rust as you can, in any case. Cleaner the metal the easier it is to weld. If it ends up being a material you can't weld steel to, you could try bolting it together. Just a back-up option. 200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.

Reply:First off.................see what kind of metal you're dealing with.......cast iron or steel.Drill a hole in the wheel somewhere with a small bit, and see what the results areIf you get chips(either little chunks or long curly fries sorta things), it's steelIf you get something that looks like very granular powder, it's cast iron"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
