Hi guys let me first say i am new here so hiNow to the point i am looking for a used tig welder for welding aluminium box section with 2mm wall i found this welder on our auction site but have no idea if it is a ac or dc welder and if it will do aluminium http://www.trademe.co.nz/Business-fa...-334637190.htmi know i will need to buy a tig gun but that is not a problem.Thanksanother option i thought of was i could get this one and make a mig wire feeder for ithttp://www.trademe.co.nz/Business-fa...-334459544.htm
Reply:old stickwelder  is 3 phase..shhould tig scratchstart okother one will not mig..
Reply:i would avoid it if i were new to welding. it is hard enough to learn on a good machine, let alone if the machine has quirks.Dynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools
Reply:You would need AC and a high freq unit to weld aluminum. Even then it would be tough because you cannot control the amperage with a pedal, only can use the pedal to turn the HI Freq on and off.UA Local 598
Reply:Thanks for the answers so far as for 3 phase it is not a problem i have 3 phase power where i am and with the powcon 400sm i can hook it up as single phase as far as i knowand im pretty sure the powcon 400sm will do mig if i make or modify a wire feeder for it They even sold a mig attachment for the powcon 400sm years agoas for being new to welding yes i am but my dad has been welding for the last 30 years just on the odd project so he is in no way a pro but he can weld if he has to and the project we need this for will be me and my dad anyway so he will be doing most of the welding probly unless i can manage to do it that ishere is a link to the powcon 400sm that i wanthttp://www.trademe.co.nz/Business-fa...-334459544.htmand some detail about ithttp://www.arc-products.com/literatu...s/400SMFOD.pdfso my question is can i make a wire feeder for the powcon 400sm and use it as a mig for aluminiumThanks
Reply:If you want to do mig alum, you will want a spoolgun rather than a standard feeder. There's probably a way to run a spoolgun from that CV powersource, similar to what you would need to run one from a CV genset unit. You'll probably need a controler as well as the spoolgun. No idea however what units would hook up with that powersource or how to adapt another unit I'm afraid..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Thanks for that info my other option was to get a ac or ac/dc arc welder and make a High frequency stabilizer but i think that will end up costing me more then i am willing to pay at this stage and nearly as much a used ac tig weldernote all this will be for aluminiumso if i go with the powcon 400sm and mig option should i get a spool gun or try my luck with a feeder and normal gunThanks
Reply:I used one of these years ago. Had 2 different Miller wire feeders that could be swapped out for different wire diameters. Welded nice. If you're gonna try aluminum with it, you'll want to use a large diameter wire... otherwise, it will bird's nest, and cause you all kinds of grief! Like DSW said, use a spool gun.JohnMiller 320 A/BPMiller Auto Arc 50Miller 150 STHLincoln SP-200Hobart "Mainliner" GeneratorPlasmaFix 50S Plasma WelderThermal Arc Pak 3XR Plasma Cutter
