Arrived at my job yesterday to find out the we'd been hit sometime between 4:00 pm the previous day & 7:00 am. They stole ALL the cable off the welding machines & six Miller suitcases. What was strange is that on my machine, they took my cable but left my whip. They also tried to get into my tool box but gave up. Anyway, just wanted to rant & say how much I hate thieves & would just love to catch them in the act. I bet I could help them with their drug problem!

Reply:Insurance? That still sucks!  I hate when someone takes what you use for a livingYou have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else. Albert Einstein
Reply:sorry to hear that, sad thing is the police really do not care about this type of theft they see it as no one gets hurt and insurance will cover it.  two yeas ago i had three different break ins in a vacant building of mine the loosers took thousand of feet of heavy copper cable, all three phase manufacturing, and probably got 5000 dollars for it in scrap.  i was insured but since no tenant the insurance co showed the fine print of no tenant no theft insurance, i now have a tenant, any way electrician and new cable 85 thousand out of my pocket it is now fixed.  but unless the cops stumble upon the theft around here who cares.Just some stuff in my shop.
Reply:The local recycle place now requires photo identification, maybe overkill but that might reduce the druggies steeling valuable "stuff" just for the recycle value.I only turn in my pop and beer cans but go through that same process, at leaste I don't have to go through a patdown like at the airports just to collect my $4.
Reply:Give us a your location, and any vins and serial numbers if you have them, we all stick together here and will watch the sale adds locally. I think Kay Sellon lost a welder 1 time and she posted up and the brothers might have tracked it down. You would be surprised what a small world it can be, and besides it probably more than the cops would do, it's a shot. Reply:Man im sorry to hear that, i hate thieves with a passion, a while back someone broke into my suv well they opened the door because it was unlocked and took the change out of my ash tray and my back pack with all my college books in it, it was petty however it was my stuff, i have never went into anyones car or house without permission and never took ne thing that wasnt mine, what is this world coming too.......I wish i could catch them in the act it would be worth my jailtime for what i would do to them, sorry bout the rant i hope you find your stuff man
Reply:You'd be surprised how dumb thieves can be. I was talking the other day about this to the guy at the used tool store. He get's stolen stuff about once a week and knows almost all the local cops in the different tonships by name. He requires photo ID preferably DL and makes a photocopy of it, phone number (It's amazing how many actually give the correct number) and the seller has to sign a paper that clearly states the item is their's and they have permission to sell it, and that if the item turns out to be stollen the police will be notified. Ad to that the security camers in the store (4) plus the 2 in the parkinglot set up to get licence plates as they leave plus one that givess a nice over all view. Cops usually make the rounds once a week to his place and a few pawn shops with a list looking for stolen property.3 kids (17-19) walked in just before I'd been in the day before. They had a couple of powertools, some missing parts and tried to sell them. The 2 guys had no ID, but the girl offered hers up so they could sell the stuff. Kids got a bit hinky when the owner kept pushing if the stuff was theirs and he'd have to notify the cops. One kid said the stuff was from his grandfather and the owner could call his dad to verify it. Phone rings but then goes to voice mail. They leave (owner still has the license copy, and he notes down the vehicle description and license plate number. About 2 hrs later a guy walks in and wants to know if any kids were in trying to sell tools, He can describe them to a T. Aparently he was working near the local ball field and saw them hanging out and when he went out front someone ran over and swiped a bunch of tools. Police report? Yep. Quick call to the right department and they are off to go try to grab the kids...He sees girlfriends swiping stuff from their boyfriends, kids swiping stuff from parents/grandparents, and the usual ones who are just stupid crooks.Good reason to keep serial numbers for most tools as well as picts and have them marked in some way thats easy to see if you no where to look..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:you guys that weld and have your jobsites should post up those infared game trail cameras..  you know the ones that take digital pictures upon movement.. there is no flash... look around, if there is only a certain way in or out, post the camera there to get license numbers also.. turn the camera on when you leave for the day.. even for home use would be good.. hard for an insurance company to default when you have proof a burglar broke in..this is the high end model, 8 megapixel, infared flashhttp://synergystore.net/ir8digitaltrailcamera.aspxLast edited by brucer; 12-01-2010 at 06:23 PM.tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:The camera suggestion is awesome. Add internet-connected webcams and you could monitor and record their feeds to PC.

Reply:Unfortunately, I don't think the company has theft insurance. We've had to cobble together some suitcases from older ones for the time being & the boss was talking to the Airgas guy about new equipment. Who ever it was knew the layout of the place & we think it was a former employee. This shop is not our main one but a secondary location that is out in the country & on a dead end road. In other words, it's an idea shop to burglarize. I believe it would take between $12,000-$15,000 to replace everything with new equipment.    I think the idea of the game camera is a good one & i'll pass that on the the boss. I'm just glad they didn't get my personal tools because it would be real tuff to replace everything. I might add that my wife had a good idea as far as a place to check for stolen goods, the local flea markets. Anyway, thanks for the support everyone.
Reply:Are serial numbers available for any of the equipment? I wonder if this site might consider having a thread or section for listing such information about stolen equipment...I can see it becoming a problem with the worldwide coverage though. There are such lists maintained by the FBI or some similar agency in the USA for vehicles, guns and similar 'high value 'tools', I believe, but don't know if the public has much access to it.I have been considering a Game Camera for just such surveillance too, plus it would be interesting to use in the woods also; quite a few different makes and models to choose from.Sometimes when these thefts are discovered, it's best to not touch things and to immediately get the cops, then to 'help' convince them that taking fingerprints, tool marks, tire tracks and shoe prints is worthwhile because solving your crime may lead to busting a large gang or solving something "more important" in the long run.  Stop and think what is probably good evidence, vs your own 'marks', to help them reduce their work. Thieves are often sloppy and leave some useful information behind.

Reply:Booby trap??? There was a guy here in Mn. that had his lake cabin busted into three times in one month. So he put a booby trap in his boat house, made it out of a 12 gauge shotgun shell, Long story but thief came in to steel his boat motor, fishing stuff...tripped the trap and damn near blue his leg off. You guessed it...The OWNER was arrested and jailed, and latter sued. spent months in and out of court (and jail) and $$$$$  It is all back wards, crazyI'm no bleeding heart here but the penalty for theft is not death. In certain cases I would like it to be but a human life is worth more than a tool box.As for booby trapping things to kill or injure people... how would you feel if some 10 year old kid broke into your boathouse for kicks and was killed by a booby trap you put there? Pretty harsh way for them to learn a lesson. I have had my tool box (over $12000) stolen once. Had a week old car stolen once. I was furious. I would have killed the person myself if I had caught them. I would have been wrong to do so.Letting emotions guide your actions is rarely wise.
Reply:a model-A starter coil attached to a metal frame or non-grounded railing will stop a thieve in their steps...literallymy dad always jokes how they attached these coils to their car frames as low-tech security systems. anyone who touches the car will be stuck there till the battery goes dead. not enough current to hurt or mame, but just enough to make your muscles contract and keep your hand wrapped around the door handledisclaimer: try at your own risk!! do not try on a newer car with an ECU

Reply:This case is being investigated (I hope) by the Brazoria County Sherrifs Dept. Brazoria Co. borders Harris Co. on the south which is the county where Houston , Tx. is. We've called all the metal recycling places in the greater Houston area to be on the lookout for copper.
Reply:Hey Pirahana, just a word to the wise.  Do not "booby trap" your stuff.  If you injure or kill the dumb SOB they will sue you for doing that.  Something about depriving him or her their rights to steal from us is against the law.  So, do the best you can to make your place as resistant as possible by using monitoring and movement detection and such, but save yourself the hassle of going to jail for electrocuting or blinding the dummy.  It is truly unfortunate that the criminal has more rights that the citizen but that is the way it is., so be carefull and do the best you can, but dont get yourself in trouble by exceeding the norms.  Hate to see you or any real citizen get screwed by the system, such as it is.  Next time you vote, keep this in mind when you choose your candidate.  This can be reversed or removed if we all look for the candidates who wont tolerate this in government.BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
Reply:In my store when someone came in to sell a guitar, you pretty quickly sized them up... they could play it, they knew the instrument or they were some guy who had ripped it off.  I think the scrap buyers are probably smarter than I am/was.   They know or have a good clue that the material is stolen.   Wish U well on recovery Pirana. That infrared camera is very keen, would be a good idea for a shop for sure.
