I am looking at these machines. Is there any difference in them or one you would buy over the other one? I orginally was pretty set on the Miller machine. Then after talking to some people it seems like the lincoln machine has some more features for about the same price since miller just raised their prices. Then a few people said about the thermal arc machine. They said it is much better then the miller and lincoln and also much lighter. All the machines are around the same prices. What do you guys think about each machine and which one would you choose?I have been searching around for a while and I just found your site.  I think I have narrowed it down to the lincoln and the thermal arc, unless people change my thoughts.I am new to welding and want to learn and take some classes.  I am looking to buy this for my father who will be welding aluminum and also different metals.  Mostly all to do with cars.  I would like to learn how to weld to try and make a roll cage, manifold and crap like that. Thanks for any input.
Reply:For what it's worth I was in the same situation about 2 weeks ago between the Lincoln and the Thermal Arc.  After getting some advice here I went with the Thermal Arc and couldn't be happier.  Still hard to believe the power that comes out of a 45lb machine.  The features are far superior to the lincoln  for about the same money.  Variable AC frequency and full featured pulse control the lincoln just can't compete with.  Duty cycle is almost twice as much too.Recently somebody posted a tig welder feature matrix, probably worth looking at that as well.
Reply:i love my pt185 although i never used the other 2 and i couldnt beat the price i got it for.
Reply:okay guys another question. I found a used lincoln tig 185 local. The guy said he would take 1400 for it. He claimes he bought 600 worth of extra stuff for it. I asked him what. This is what he said. Extras include $250 of filler rod, $350 forfinger tip control, $120 for the stick holder for arc welding.Does that sound accurate? Also what do you think would be a good price to pay for a machine that he claimes is only used 3 months? Also he said the warrenty will transfer. Is this correct? I have narrowed it down to the thermal arc and the Lincoln. I was going to get the TA but if I can get this for a decent price and save some money I may just go with this one. Let me knowThanks
Reply:all that stuff depend's on if he got the copper wire to go with the stinger which would be about 75ft around hereto get it up that high and the other stuff dont sound like an accurate price.
Reply:$250 buys a lot of filler wire unless he bought some mag or titanium rod and finger tip control can be picked up for about $150. For $1400 the machine should be almost new with tig torch, footpedal, running gear, gauges and hoses, with lead and stinger and a mess of spare torch parts and some filler wire. If the argon bottle goes with it thats a big plus.
Reply:The welder does not come with a bottle.  What are you guys referring to when you say a stinger?  Also this unit should come with the guages correct?  This is some more information I just got from him.A pound each of SS, Alum and Carbon steel filler rod, 5 lbs of ARC welding electrodes and a pistol grip style electrode holder and 25' of cable
Reply:the stinger is the electrod holder with welding lead A pound of ss filler is about $15 a pound of aluminum is about $20 and steel filler is under $10 and the electrode holer and the 25 ft of lead is worth about $$75-$100 depending on the price of copper. prices vary where you live so these are just ballpark figures. oh and 5 lbs of rod depending on what they are can be about $10-$20.
Reply:cool thanks for the info.  Another guy on a forum I am on pmed me and told me the seller was full of crap and he is trying to pull a fast one on me.  And with your info just confirms it.  What would you pay for a used machine like this?  Obviously the seller likes to stretch the truth a little.  Also is the warrenty really transferable?
Reply:FWIW, Buying in 10lb packages I was able to get mild steel filler (ER70S-2) for $1.40/lb and 4043 Aluminum for under $3.00/lb. The Thermal Arc kit comes with a stinger and a (somewhat minimal) torch spares kit.
Reply:the unit new with running gear footpedal and stinger, gauges and hose lists for $2100 ,I know it can be bought cheeper Wickeds10 got his for about $1700 new. It is a nice unit and if he doesnt have the footpedal for it thats $150 he could knock off the price, give a look on ebay and see what they go for, people are willing to pay extra money for the name brand units. Good luck
Reply:here a lincoln p175 for $900 engloid is a member here try and contact him heres the linkhttp://www.aws.org/cgi-bin/mwf/topic_show.pl?id=5975
