Hi I am using a micro welder developed for welding small parts such as jewellery. The problem I am having is that the welds on most materials are brittle and do not hold. I am using 99.8% argon at a flow rate of around 3-4 litres a minute. I am wondering if any of the welding gurus might have an idea how to remedy this. I assume its an oxidising thing as I still get some soot, maybe a different sheilding gas may do it?
Reply:http://www.lacytools.ca/catalog/prod...45d5a105bccdd0quite an interesting machine there. In tig welding 3-4 ltrs per minute is an immense flow, normally 15 cubic feet per hour is standard. Since i know nothing of this machine i'm not sure how that flowrate works. Other than flowrate problems you might have a bad electrode or reverse polarity. good luckStangnetShop Full Of Stuff. Joey
Reply:What are the welders' capabilites (amperage/voltage) and what materials are you trying to weld?  From what you describe, the machine does not have the capability to weld mild steel except in very thin guages.  If you are welding steel, high argon content gas is not indicated.  For low power welders, like your, I'd try CO2 at 25 cubic feet per hour, or about 3 liters/min.HankHank
Reply:looks like this machine is a mini tig welder , be sure to clean everything before you weld. And you may want to try increasing and decreasing your flow and see if one works a little better than the other. Also make sure you are running enough power you may just be "glueing" the pieces together.
Reply:Was bugging me so i looked it up, 20 cfh is damn close to 10lpm so try increasing your gas that should take care of your problems. And don't forget to clean you pieces before your weld.
Reply:it would help if we knew what the flow was by the manual, being that it seems to be a micro tig machine, I myself wouldn't think it was so highStangnetShop Full Of Stuff. Joey
Reply:Hi and thanks for the suggestions. It is a micro tig welder avaliable from www.lampertusa.com/ the suggested flow rate is between 0.3-0.4 litres a second I think. I us the machine for tack welding precious metals as well as nickel titanium etc. The machine is described as been capable of making a homogenous weld on all these metals. It has 8 power setting and 2 intensity switch. Its great for tacking peices together so I can solder them with out moving but I wish to make proper seam welds that are as strong a bond as a solder join. Am I asking to much of this machine?Last edited by Tel750; 12-21-2004 at 03:12 AM.
Reply:Ok, i looked through the info and found some points. 3lpm of flow is normal. Clean, Sharp electrodes are a must. and use very light hand pressure on the electrode.  i like that machine, very cool!!StangnetShop Full Of Stuff. Joey
Reply:Thanks Vipermanz I like it too sure beats spending hours trying to wire stuff together so you can solder it. I am at this moment using it to tack parts on to a ring and solder them its great for that. I am also going to tack a frame together to hold a gemstome that I would never be able to do with soldering. Maybe the strong welds will come to.
Reply:does that thing use a tungsten electrode or somethiing else? expensive little bugger
Reply:Yes they are tungsten electrodes. they are kept sharp using a diamond wheel in held in a pendant motor. And yes again its expensive that why I want to get it to do some real welding.
