I am planning on buying a used argon bottle to get my Tig up and running.  Is there anything I should consider before buying it?  I know it's out of the cert date and already called my gas shop.  A new hydro is $15.  Any issues with it possibly being a leased bottle or something stupid that would prevent me from exchanging/filling it once I pay for the hydro test?  I just don't want to shell out a hundy for a bottle and get stuck with a boat anchor once the bottle is empty.
Reply:A lease is around $60.00 for the year & the fillup is $95.00.  I go with the lease'ers myself, less hassles than if the tank gets flagged after paying the $$.Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:I personally have a lease, because they let me exchange the bottle for any other bottle. I can bring my 60cf argon and get a 300+cf oxygen if I want. All I pay is the fill fee.
Reply:Possibly ask the owner to provide proof that he owns the cylinder by he/she producing a sales reciept or bill of sale for the cylinder.  If the seller can, get a copy of his/her reciept and make sure they present you with a bill of sale.  If you are not sure, walk away from the sale and lease for the time being.A few of my toys !LinuxMintManjaroMiller Roughneck 2E Lincoln WeldPak 100HTP MTS 160 Chicago Electric 80amp Inverter   Victor O/A
Reply:As far as a leased cylinder, that would greatly depend on the size and your local suppliers. In most places cylinders 150cf ish or smaller are regularly customer owned and there are no issues exchanging them. That may vary by location, as one poster has mentioned the biggest customer owned his LWS will accept was 80cf. Large cylinders, 200cf + are usually canidates for lease cylinders. Again that may vary, I have several 282cf cylinders I purchased from my hydro shop that came from a company that was switching over to alum cylinders from steel. Note that my usual welding supply will not exchange these. I have to go else where to get them filled. The old counter guy occasionally would let me exchange one in a pinch, but the new guy won't.One thing that will help if it turns out to be a leased cylinder, is to get an account with that company. I never have any issues exchanging cylinders, even if they are borrowed from a friend who uses the same LWS. I have an account, I have one of their cylinders ( irregardless if it's on my list of cylinders) and they will swap it no questions asked..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I don't really know how the leases work...or at least how they keep track of them.  I am guessing by the serial number on the bottle.  I am looking at a 150 cubic foot bottle to buy for $130, but I don't want to buy the bottle to find out it's a lease and the guy never owned it in the first place.  I would rather buy and own a bottle than pay for a lease if I find a deal.  But like I said, I don't want to take it in to somewhere and have them not fill it or, worse, tell me it doesn't technically even belong to me.  I think it had a praxair or airgas sticker on it.  I don't think its a "property of" sticker, more of the "Argon bottle ID" label with their logo for branding.  Would they be able to tell me the status on the bottle if I called with the serial number?  I know the bottle is at least 5 years out of cert.I have a Argon/CO2 bottle that I bought new for my mig and want an Argon bottle for my Tig I just picked up.Last edited by kazlx; 12-13-2010 at 09:46 PM.

Reply:Yeah but you can't switch to a different size, right? I that's the difference that I was trying to highlight, and the reason I decided to lease instead of buy.Lease for a bottle is around $45 a yr, doesn't matter what size it is. I can swap my 60 for a 120 or a 330 or whatever and I just pay the fill.
Reply:Originally Posted by welderShaneI own a 60cf and all i do when i go to a welding supply place is just switch it out for another full one and all i pay is the refill too but i still own the cylinder. Usually 80cf or less are considered customer owned cylinders (unless you lease it) and they swap them out for a full one when you need a refill. You pay the one time fee to buy the cylinder but once you do its your cylinder and after that you just pay for the refills.
Reply:Here's pics of the tank.  Has a Praxair sticker, so I will try calling tomorrow to see if I can get an answer.Looks like it was last certified in 94 and was good for 10 years if I'm reading it right.
Reply:FWIW, I called Praxair and they said as long as you aren't paying for a lease, the bottle is owned, and most likely one of that size is owned.  He said I don't even have to hydro it, since it has a Praxair sticker on it, just bring it in and exchange it.

Reply:I don't see any reason to lease unless you wanted big bottles for cheap.  Yes, you can swap bottles for any size, but unless you are using them until they are empty, it's a waste of money because you have to pay the full fill charge anyway.I think 150 will be a good size.  The 80 I have is fine and easy to move around, but the 154 seems a bit more economical to fill and I won't have to go as much.  I really don't like leasing anything.  I could see if I owned a shop and had to exchange big bottles all the time.
Reply:Maybe leasing around here is different. I don't pay any extra to fill a leased bottle.I ended up doing the math, and I would have to own the bottle for 2.5 years for it to be cheaper to buy the bottle. As a semi-travelling college student, the lease was perfect for me. Everyone will have a different need though. I can see why people would buy a bottle.
Reply:I have a 125 cu ft on my mig and when I bought my tig, it came with a 40 cu ft bottle. 40 cu ft is almost worthless for tig. I spent more time running it to the shop to fill it than I ever did welding. I was paying about $19 to fill a 40 cu ft and I can get a 330 cu ft filled for about $59. So, I bought a 330 for the tig and that took care of my issues with constantly being out of gas. I still have a full 40 cu ft sitting there in case I need it, but I'd rather just sell it since I can't do much with it (maybe I'll use it and eventually try to swap it for a 40 for my mig). 330's are heavy, but I can move them in and out of my truck without help (just be careful) and it sure beats always being out of gas.KevinHobart Handler 210Tweco Fabricator 181iLincoln Squarewave Tig 175
Reply:If it was me I would check with Altair Gases and Equipment, as that is the name on the neck ring.  That cylinder has a unique serial # that may be able to be tracked. Generally a cylinder with a stamped neck ring belongs to someone.Last edited by Fred s; 12-15-2010 at 02:36 PM.
Reply:I bought a used bottle (came with a used welder) & when I went to fill it they just exchanged it like they always do... the replacement bottle has liberty welding on the neck, but, of course this is my bottle because the one I exchanged it for was my bottle... I don't think having a name of the neck is that big of a deal, but then again so far I've only dealt with the one supplier all these years, not sure what would happen if I took any of my bottles labeled with liberty to another supplier what would happen... but they are all my bottles so ??miller 330a bp TIGmiller dynasty 200DX TIGmillermatic 185 MIGthermal dynamics cutmaster 101 plasma cuttersnap-on YA5550 plasma cutterhypertherm powermax 30 plasma cutterbaileigh CS225 cold sawetc....

Reply:The video has an error, though, about the retest markings. He said the "+" gives you five years, and the star gives another five years for a total of ten years before the next hydro is due.A normal hydro is good for 5 years.  If you have a star, then that hydro is good for ten years.  If you have a "+",  you can also have a 10 percent overfill.http://www.airproducts.com/NR/rdonly...nformation.pdfTim
