Today I was at my local scrap yard. It is not a huge scrap yard and they guy that runs it tries to get the good stuff and sell it rather than scrap it.Today I was there and noticed a vise and asked the guy what he wanted for it. He said; "So, would you give me $8 for it?"Uh, SURE.Check it out.  I put a welding clamp in the photo for size relationship. It weighs about 40-50 lbs.I started to take it apart so I could clean it up. I will sandblast the painted areas and then repaint.Unfortunately I can't see how to remove the threaded rod. I took the allen screw out of the end but the round nut will not come off. I don't want to damage it so I may just tape it all up and blast it while still together. Attached Images

Reply:After you have removed the set screw try to fit or secure something around the round end and hammer it off.   I scrap all the time and a lot of the ends of threads will come off with a few love taps.  (As long as you remove the set screw.Goodluck“I'm going to do the thing that God put Galen Beasley on this Earth to do:Have Salon quality hair and weld.Nothing like a good cup of coffee and the smell of 6010 burning in the morning. 971-204-3444 cell API ASME Structural NDT and Repair
Reply:Galen,The round end should unscrew? I sprayed it with PB Blaster before coming in tonight so maybe tomorrow I will be able to get it off.Thanks.
Reply:It looks like a shaper vice! And in pretty good shape for being in the weather.Matt
Reply:Bob,First, good find.  Just $8???  You suck.      Next, instead of sandblasting it, may I suggest doing "electrolytic rust removal" instead.  That way there is NO metal removal, just rust removal.  Simple, easy, no effort (once you put the workpiece in the container and fill the container and hook up the wires and then periodically skim off the 'scum' and replace and/or rearrange the electrodes as needed).  Search around for the details on how to do it.  IIRC a Canadian (swells IIRC ??) here used it to restore a throatless shear and some 'other' sites have bunches of restorations of old(er) vises using the method as well.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:This electrolytic rust removal thing is new to me.  Here's a link that describes how it works:http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/ru..._derusting.htmLooks interesting--now to find some rusty thing and try it.Tim
Reply:x2 on electrolysis. I've used it on everything from small parts to tractor fenders. But, thanks to the Meth heads, we can't get lye around here anymore so the formula isn't as potent as it use to be.

Reply:I may just pass on taking it completely apart. I have such a LARGE investment in it that I do not want to damage it.It works fine just ugly so maybe a wire brush and some paint and let it go at that. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
Reply:I wouldn't worry how it looked as long as it's functional, I actually like things looking used because it makes me think I know what I'm doing!I'd just clean the jaws and maybe make a cover for them from some scrap alloy or copper for working on soft stuff that I'm worried about marring. PB blaster is good stuff, if that won't budge a bolt after some soaking, then out comes the smoke wrench!  The thing I never understood is what melting a foam cup has to do with surface tension and breaking free nuts (there's a cartoon on the can with them boasting how fast the stuff melts foam cups)Good find!
Reply:hvw> Isn't Drano in the can mostly lye?  I use it to remove all the gunk on old Cast Iron skillets etc... they come out light grey, clean and ready to re temper with lard and heat. Kool nice Vise Bob,    Might be very handy because the  jaws are low and flat and out of the way. Make some inserts of brass maybe to hold knife blades etc.?   A keen find.Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools
