first welds with miller 135 on 3/16 mild plate set on tap 4 75 spd. bead starts small and high but gets wider and flatter after 3 inchs. Small ball at end of stickout so I lower spd to 60. dragging still starts small and widens out as I lay the bead. Any suggestions on how I can keep the bead consistant height/width? Is it a heat issue, speed issue or hand control?thanksRaymond

Reply:Miller 135 with taps??? You mean Hobart? Or are you on #4 on the volts on the MM 135? I'm gonna assume you mean HH 135. 3/16 makes more sense on T4 that way. First off, you need to get some bigger wire. .035 is the recommended size for 3/16, with .030 a close enough second choice. You won't be able to get enough wire going into the weld to spread it out with the .024, I'm thinking. Without seeing it, it sounds like it is either heating up sufficiently at the end of the weld or you are settling into a good rhythm or both. The 135 class machine isn't rated for single pass 3/16 with solid wire. It will do it easily with .035 fluxcore, though.
Reply:I don't know how old it is but it is a Miller and it does have four settings for voltage. Beyond that "I Know Nothing!" to quote my fat friend.
Reply:The machine is rated for 3/16 with flux-core. Try some .030 wire - but don't expect too much. You would do better with CO2.Hank |
