I was wondering if anyone knows of a good online welding supply house with discount prices. I need to weld cast steel on a backhoe. Also some welding needed on the main dipper housing. The last time I bought rod like this it was about 7 yrs ago for $20 a pound. So I guess it must be much higher now.Embrace theTea Party movement. Congress! Reply:Cast steel, if that's what the part truely is, can be welded with normal rods like E7018. Nickel rods are normally used for cast iron. Try a spark test with a grinder to confirm what the base metal is. You'll have to search elsewhere for pictures or video of what the sparks look like from different materials. I don't have any of those handy.Nickel rods come in 2 basic alloy chemistries 100% Nickel, and an alloy thats about 2/3rds nickel and the balance is other elements. One leaves a weld deposit that is machineable, and the other does not. Last time I priced nickel rods, they could be found for about $33/lb on-line. Some of the other, more exotic rods for welding cast iron are much higher, like 2x more...Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:Look up Stoody "Welco Super Missleweld".I'm not a fan of using it though. If you think you need more strength than E7018 you can move up with lo-hy fillers for less money.Matt

Reply:Nickel rod is made of nickel and alloy. If you take nickel alloy 200 then it is pure nickel which has excellent corrosion resistant and long ductility. It has good weld ability and magnetic properties. To know the discounted rates you can contact this company: Regent Steel & Engg. Co. website: www.regentsteel.com
