tig welding titanium

what kinda of tungsten do i use for welding titunaum? and what ac or dc. i think it is dc but im not sure. thanks

Reply:Sorry for the "no reply".  Use DC, just like steel. You are going to need to either weld in a chamber or have some trailing cup on the torch. Ti is very sensitive to air while cooling. Back purge as well. The best way is to do small parts in a purge chamber. I use 1% lanthanated but others work fine.What are you welding?
Reply:i am welding a pipe for my buddys xr 250 supermotoard dirtbike. i bought the trailing cup, and the rod ( 96 bucks a pound ouch). i have all diffrent types of tugsten so thats not a prob. and since im only going to do this once going to take another argon bottle and run some lines off it and run them to the torch cup. then i will have my buddy work the valve on the end of the tank. another idea we had was flush out our sandblasting cabnit with argon but i really dont want to do that. thanks again
Reply:Don't forget the inside of the pipe as well. It doesn't take much. Just dam off an end with cardboard put a little hole in it and run the hose to a dam on the other end. Use a little tape and adjust your flow to purge all air out of the pipe. That will keep the inside pretty. The inside of the pipe is actually easier than the outside. Sometimes it is a little challenging because of the heat and cardboard. I strongly recommend low amps multipass welds versus the one big amp pass.

Reply:Let us know how it turns out.  Ti welds really nicely if you can keep the argon on it. If you can practice on a little piect you'll see. Good luck!
