Has anyone built their own welder from 'scratch"?I own a nice 220v Lincoln (so I'm not just some cheapskate ), but I'm collecting the parts to build a small 110v stick welder... After the 110v stick, I plan to build a TIG for about (hopefully) $300 in parts (new & salvaged) similar to the project write-ups below.I'm doing these projects partly to satisfy my desire to build something useful (and for the portability of a 110 unit) and partly to learn more about the inner workings of welders and self educate myself some Electrical Engineering.Best of luck,Generz. To anyone not familiar with home-built welders, here are some good write-ups.Stick welder made from MOT (microwave oven transformers)http://www.dansworkshop.com/Homebuil...20welder.shtmlhttp://www.geocities.com/aaawelder/http://www.instructables.com/id/Smal...c-welder-NYDG/http://www.instructables.com/id/Buil...memade-Welder/TIGhttp://classicbroncos.com/homemade-welder.shtmlhttp://www.theturboforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=8872http://myweb.cableone.net/rschell/TIG.htmhttp://www3.telus.net/public/a5a26316/TIG_Welder.htmlhttp://www.thompdale.com/tig_controller/tig.htmhttp://www.hackaday.com/2005/07/16/junkyard-tig-welder/meh
Reply:I have. My first welder was a few MOT's. It was actually a decent stick welder. A buddy of mine has it now, he uses it from time to time. It's a fun project!Miller EconotigCutmaster 38Yes ma'am, that IS a screwdriver in my pocket!

Reply:Nope, mine was AC only. It welded pretty darn good though.Look at Ebay for rectifiers.Miller EconotigCutmaster 38Yes ma'am, that IS a screwdriver in my pocket!
Reply:If you build one I hope you keep us informed I think it would be a neat project.pro-level dumpster diver Hobart 125EZ
Reply:My dad built a welder out of a motion picture transformer. It was really a mean machine. He seemed to be the only one that could really weld with it. We also had a gas powered Miller welder that my brother would take outside and fire up because we hated the thing so much. It gave you a good shock too if you didn't watch it.Jim
