Hello All,Would anyone have any experiences with this type of set-up? I'm wondering if others have run a 6500W generator to power a Miller TBolt or comparable sized welder.TBolt Specs220 V input - 50/60HzWeld Amp Range: AC 30-235 / DC 30-160Output Range: AC 225A at 25V / DC 150A at 25VAmps input at rated output (230V): 47.5A Generac Genny Specs220V plug60HzOutput (continuous): 6500wMax Output (surge): 8000wRated 120/240 VAC Amperage: 27.1Max 120/240 VAC Amperage: 33.330 Amp breaker for the 220 socketIf I'm reading these specs correctly....the TBolt requires 47.5 amps but the genny is only allowing 27.1 with a 30 amp breaker. No go on this set up right????
Reply:the generator doesnt have enough power to operate the thunderbolt correctly .....if u had a inverter stick welder id say possibly depends upon size. i tried to tell the same thing to a person i worked with in california this year who went and bought a brand new thunderbolt and tried runnin it off the trailblazer ....its not enough power i am no electrical engineer take it for what its worth ... if u have a transformer machine u need big amounts of power to make big amounts of power a inverter uses small amounts and changes the frequency to make big amounts of powerI forgot how to change this.
Reply:That's what I thought. I just wanted to see what you all thought. If anyone else has any input, I'd love to hear it.Thanks,HD
Reply:Volts x Amps = Watts47.5A x 240v = 11400 watts. So a 6500 watt genny would only power half capacity, or half the dial...Lincoln Power MIG 210 MP ( boat anchor )Lincoln Weld-Pac 100 HDHobart IronMan 230Cutmaster 42Jackson NexGenSumner Ultra ClampsDWM120
Reply:I read through the manual for the Thermal Arc 161s inverter welder and it recommends a 6000 watt genny. I was kind of disappointed that it doesn't list 6010 on the list of rods to use but it doesn't say not to use it either. If you want something to be portable maybe you should look into a inverter and on the pluse side this unit also has lift start tig.
Reply:You guys need to start looking at the capacity of the 230 volt outlets/breakers that are on these gensets too. It could be a 10 kw genset but if the largest receptacle on it is 30 amps (actual output), that'what you're gonna get. These genset packages can sort of lead you down the wrong path unless you study the specs good. A 6500 watt unit might be 6500 cumulative out of several outlets and not likely 6500 out of any one port. Watch each manufacturer to get a trend on what wattage they break over from 20 amp receptacles to 30 amp recepatcles (230 volt).Last edited by Sandy; 01-04-2011 at 09:41 PM."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
