I needed something I could mount a Ranger 305 I'm planning to get fairly soon onto, so I built this skid.  I got the deck for it cut at work on the burning table, and cut the channel on a horizontal bandsaw we have at work.  The angle iron I just cut with a zipcut.  It hasn't been cleaned or painted yet (hence the brown), but it will be when I get a chance.  Once all the parts were cut, it took me a half hour  lunchbreak to fit and weld it all together.  It's welded with dualshield .045 wire.  Everything is stitch welded together. "high quality" paintbrush drawing. Pics.Last edited by mb_welder; 02-06-2008 at 07:00 AM.
Reply:Hmm...can't edit it again.  The Channel measurements are out a bit.  the sides are about 3/8" and the web or whatnot is 1/4"
Reply:Do you have a way to hold the skid into the truck?  A ranger 305 floating around in the back of a truck aint a good thing.Looks nice so far.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I'm still working out a way to keep the skid from sliding around.  I might have to add tie down points or something.  I'm open to suggestions.Last edited by mb_welder; 02-06-2008 at 06:23 PM.
Reply:Nice job.  I am plaining on building the same thing.  I have the idea to put a bolt on the truck bed.  Something like a 5th wheel and have a hole cut in the skid to bolt the two together.  Hope my 2cents help.
Reply:Here's what I came up with.  Shy of about a million different ideas I had, this one was the simplest.  I added boltholes to the bottom of the channel.  There are 4 total.  Each one is 6" x 1 1/2", with a 1/2" hole punched out in the center.PicsWhat's with all this white $#!*?! Reply:More progress.  This weekend I got the old man to help me unload it and set it upside down on a furniture mover. After some wire wheeling, This is what I'm going to paint it with.
Reply:Bottom de-rusted and sprayed.
Reply:looks good.  nice work.  Now what about the top?
Reply:Tomorrow...well, today I guess... Before work hopefully!  After that?  Work on bolting the skid down.  After after that, Building two brackets for bolting my greenlee box to my headache rack.  After after after that, Go to praxair, talk to them again and buy  the welder.  After about that point, I figure I'll play it by ear!  I'm not really in any rush, I have a good paying shop job, I'm just working on setting up something for on the weekends...One step at a time.Last edited by mb_welder; 02-19-2008 at 07:56 AM.

Reply:Are those channels wide enough to accommodate forklift forks?  Or do you plan on bolting your machine to the skid and lifting on and off with the machine's lifting bail?
Reply:DOing this as a weekend thing will turn into your own welding business.  It did for me any way.  I just couldnt see putting the same amount of work in to making somebody else more money than myself.  so Now my Fiance and I have our own welding business making fance, and gates and whatnot.... anyway you will enjoy the welder and you will enjoy making money.  and most importantly you will have a huge sense of accomplishment.
