I had a little extra time in the shop today so I built my own turn table.  I had to gear it down a few times. You cant see it, but I have a broke piece of metal in the shape of a C with a nut welded to it so I can adjust the turning speed. Reply:I am in awe.

Reply:I have to say, as many times as I would use one, it looks perfect to me.  I have to start 'thinking out of the box' a bit more.

Reply:That is so  But as inquired about earlier..How much weight will it turn??Great idea......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:If that's a reversable drill powering it, you can play the albums backwards to hear the devil's messages.  Be the river, Baby!
Reply:Seems like there are parts missing....... Maybe another gizmo and a doohicky would make it about right...
Reply:I've got an old Led Zepplin record that we could play.

Reply:That's awsome! Not sure what I'd use it for, but I want one.
Reply:It looks like you'd want to use a No. 10 nail for a stylus. I think I have some old Styx albums you could use to try it out. Bob RosenbaumFormer PublisherPenton's WELDING Magazine
Reply:Maybe it's time to  whip out the old big ten inch; record, of the band that plays the blues.
Reply:That is ingenuity!        I've allways wondered why welding positioners cost $o much, they're not that complicated.  Your's is more complicated, but free!I like your rotational grounding brush.  Another way to do that, is to wrap a braided copper strap 180 degrees around the final turn table shaft and spring load tension so it rubs on the shaft.  I copied this idea from a Jetline positioner, and used it for custom automated MIG positioners in the auto industry. Not sure, but you may need to look at keeping the drill motor insulated from the welding circuit, that is not touching the metal on your positioner or welding table.  If it's not grounded, and if your grounding brush connection is poor, the weld current may flow through the drill motor and cord.
Reply:My co-worker suggested that I scrap his old player needle and try to play something.. I'm sure it would work.  I thought about placing the ground on the shaft, but there is not much room between the table and the grinder head.  The table is still moving a little too fast for my likes, even with all the step downs so I might have to throw another grinder in the loop.   I'll post of pictures of a weld once I get things going slower.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:Were did you get all the scrap grinders, or are they in good working condition, just serving another purpose now?  That is some thinker you got on your shoulders.Really cool project.
Reply:Brain,To give you an idea of the speed you want for your positioner, figure 6 inches per minute (ipm) for TIG and 30 ipm for spray MIG.So for a 6 inch diameter part, that translates to 0.32 rpm and 1.59 rpm respectively, and for timing perposes 3.2 and 0.63 minutes per revolution.
Reply:Wow! Goes to show that nothing will stand in the way of a man with a plan.Quick question, where did that large flat disc that serves as your parts platform come from? Looks like it was plasma cut but how did you get it so perfect?
Reply:Let me check my parts list:1) Old armatures - check2) Right angle grinder heads - check3) Rubber bands - check4) 1/2" drill - check5) scrap aluminum - checkOK, I'm ready to make one!Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
Reply:You -will- need to put a spatter shield over your drive belt rubber-band.  Rubber bands don't tolerate hot metal spatter at all. That is so Rube Goldberg, I love it.   To get more speed reduction out of the drive train, find some scrap tube/pipe and sleeve that first dead grinder's armature to increase the OD.Take some more aluminum angle and brace under the platform's grinder head to stabilize it some more.  Take some transfer roller balls and mount them under the periphery of the platform on some little posts to stabilize it even more.Drape some braided copper strap over your brass ground strap to get a little better contact patch to the bottom of the platform, if needed.Man, those are some ugly welds on there.  It definitely needs a doohickey somewhere in there.
Reply:I had a little extra time on my hands, so I decided to work on the turning fixture once again... It runs slow enough to do pretty steady TIG work now. The grinders were in the scrap tool box, so I helped myself.  There are a few more grinders in there, so if the money is right, I can make one for you also.   The plate is something I had laying around from an old plasma job.  I think it's around 12" in diameter by 1/8" thick.Because of all the reduction, it has no problem turning a 50 lb. bucket of bolts even though it's driven with rubber bands.  There is a little backlash from all the slop in the grinders, so I'll have to put a little more resistance on the plate. Not so clean aluminum pipe and plate, running at 150-200 amps for about 10 minutes with no smoke coming out of the grinder heads.Finially got the hang of the set speed and goofed off with this S.S. tube and plate.  There is 3/32 tungsten in the pic for reference. Reply:That is creative and well spend hours... better than buying cigarette in Wal-Martthat just to cool, and why i dont get rid of broken tools thay can still be usedChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
Reply:A simple windshield wiper motor attached to the turntable would do the same thing. It has a lot of torque and would be easy to adjust the speed.By the way, what's the part number on those drive belts?
Reply:All those moving parts, rotating shafts, and exposed belts.I smell a huge fine from OSHA when they hear of this contraption!!Nice work - lots of trial and error in projects like that.  I agree with Moonrise -to change your speed, adjust the O.D. of the driven shaft where your rubber bands are.  You could use duct tape, or some thin strips of rubber held in place by hose clamps.  Just don't use anything that would make it look "tacky"!!
Reply:Ha Ha what ever happened to junk yard wars? I loved that show!
Reply:Mmmm... maybe I can make one out of a used radio antenna rotator... might need to adjust the speed yes...Unit in my fab shop dept:my good hand and team that trust me...A lone welder make art... a village full of welder make Miracles...
