i have a small side job for a freind, he wanted his old wood chipper knife hard faced, after looking at the knife i suggested we cut new ones out of abrassive resistyance steel-after some research - i am considering usinf AR500 plate 3/8 thick- is this steel good for this application?
Reply:what is the cost of buying factory new blades?  anytime you mess with something spinning at high rpm and putting home made stuff in it to possiibly blow apart and kill someone there is a huge liability, even though your friend says dont worry..WORRY..because everyone else after the accident will be looking for you..if the factory says you can weld the blades without compromising there integity, then that would be the way togo..
Reply:I gotta go with road kill on this one.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:I have a PTO chipper, I sharpen the blades, (two) with a sanding disc. I have no idea what they are made of, but if I had to guess, just plain old mild steel, (and cheap steel at that). Just going by how easy they sharpen. I'd be real careful about hard facing something I had no idea what it is.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:We resharpen chipper blades in the Blanchard Grinder all the time..Just re-sharpen them and leave them alone....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I sharpen industrial chipper blades on the surface grinder and they are usualy made from D2 tool steel hardened to about 34-36Rc. I all depends on the style and type of chipper.LarryMiller XMT 304 CC/CVSyncrowave 180 SDLincoln PowerMig 255XTTermalDynamics 52Lincoln 305GComlpete machine shop to back it up
Reply:the chipper it self is a chipmore chipper, it is a off shoot from the ashplund brand the man uses iy on weekly basis - the unit is prob every bit of 20 years old. the cutting knifes are in bad shape - they are 16x3 with a original thickness of 3/8 of a inch...he wanted to have them sharpened and a abbrasive hard face applied ...after some research on new blade cost versus having him  buy a plate of chromolly steel and have me fab up the actuall replacement blades and a couple of back up sets for use when others are being sharpened is more cost efficent in the long run....the actual fabrication is basic and kinda sucks no welding all cuts will be done  via plama cutter .....and specs will be drawn from the ashplund equivelent of the chipmore.  all info found online.    except for type of metal. i appr any further info you can provide ...thanks
