Is it really possible for Tig

I have been told that it is possible to weld steel in tig fashion, the same that your do stainless only steel filler, If this is true then what would be the tungston that should be used? I have looked on sites that sell welders and see that some models advertise the steel tig welding. I guess I need to go back to school .      can any one enlighten me on this? thanks to all. one good deed is worth a thousand good intentions
Reply:The tungsten is the electrode that does not melt. You can melt just about any base material with the torch using any type of tungsten. The reason that a different tungsten is used is for the properties it exhibits when welding. My experience with welding steel and stainless steel is that no change in tungsten is needed. You only need to change the filler rod that is being used. Use stainless rod for stainless and steel rod for steel.

Reply:All tig units can weld steel. 90% of TIG welding is done on Steel. 2% or 1% thoriated, or 1.5% or 2% lanthanated. The same tungsten used for stainless will work fine.
Reply:In my experience with an AC/DC tig welder there is not a metal that cannot be welded.  There are some very challenging metals, and depending on the skill rather impossible, but can be done.  You can also braze with tig.  My favorite with tig is welding a razor blade to a railroad track.  I find it very interesting the look on peoples face, though there is not much market for it,  just a novelty.
