So this axle came to me that was broken right at one of the U-bolts on one side, it turns out the owner was backing his boat into his driveway and the axle broke. from what i saw it just rusted out and couldn't handle the stress. Sorry I don't have any pics of the original axle. so this is how i went about fixing it.......once removing both old spindles, they were a little too tightso we heat up the pipeand it will tap right onnow weld it up...next post CharlesThunderbolt AC/DCRed Flames BWELincoln sp-135t

Reply:Nice work !!Good pics   weld it like you own it
Reply:Nice workmanship!1-Did you check spindle toe-in, toe-out, during this replacement of the axle tube?(It's easy to get things cocked, which isn't noticed until pulling down the road.)Blackbird
Reply:I could be wrong, but there is no toe-in or toe out on trailer axles. Nice work BTW!!!DanMy instructor said someone will catch on fire during class...He wasn't joking!!

Reply:Yes Sandy axle tubes are bent upward on 3000 lbs plus axles due to the load. On lower capacity axles like Reliable's axle and others there is no need for the bend.Dave I agree that that toe-in would be a great addition to help any trailer track better behind the tow-vehicle. That is pretty cool that you take that into account and done it!!  I "think" that most mainstream trailer axles companies do not do this.  Dave do ya have a pic of your fixture that you use??? Got me curious now!!!!DanMy instructor said someone will catch on fire during class...He wasn't joking!!

Reply:Many of the guys don't agree with even a bit of toe in, and it's pretty much true for heavy duty rigs, tractor trailers and equipment trailers and or dual axle trailers. In theory it isn't needed.  But for utility trailers it's a matter of preference and opinion.  The price to pay for toe in is extra scrubbing of the tires, premature wear and with dual axles, not much gain. With single axle trailers the gain is, unloaded, it tows straighter and less herky jerky. A free wheeling empty or lightly loaded trailer is a rut and grove chaser. A little toe-in (1/8th minus) helps relieve that somewhat. It adds a bit of drag. Ya have to remember that many or most utility trailers spend half their travel miles empty and many only partially loaded the other half. The discussion of toe-in on trailers is usually not worth the battle. Remember autos are mis-aligned (toed-in) by designed even tho it isn't needed and causes tire wear.I want to add that when you buy a set of double utility axles, you most often end up with two singles with toe-in and all, the only difference is the hanger kit. It's there to be seen and measured, right or wrong.Last edited by Sandy; 04-01-2008 at 01:13 AM.
Reply:I can see tandems not benefiting from toe-in since the axles are somewhat stabilizing or tracking themselves. Singles axles benefit alot from toe-in. DanMy instructor said someone will catch on fire during class...He wasn't joking!!

Reply:Thanks for the write-up! Makes sense to me. If you do a more indepth write keep me in mind. Somewhere in the future I am going to build a teardrop camper. I want to build the trailer axle for it. I am going to 6 lug by 5-1/2 bolt pattern, but use light 1500-2000 springs. The more you know about this teardrop  the weirder it!!!
