We have an application that a customer is requiring us to weld F11 Chrome Moly to 304 Stainless Steel. We have never welded these two particular metals to each other. Can anyone tell me if there are any special requirements in welding these two alloys?Thank you
Reply:Nope can't tell ya..Never did it...What is the piece when done?Probably want to use 309 filler and Tig to do this.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:We will be welding a flange to a machined part that is manufactured from 304SS Bar. The finished product is a thermowell.
Reply:F11 isn't anything crazy, standard Cr.-Mo. I agree with zapster, ER309 is going to be the beset choice either Tig or Mig depending on the size of the thing. BTW get an 'L' grade filler (e.g. ER309-L)
Reply:We make that weld with inconel 625 where I work. 309 ss is fine but in boiler applications most folks have gone to inconel.
Reply:Hey Djenkins,I agtree with Zap & haney regarding using 309.....& definitely use 309L. If you have a need to anodize, gonna need a heat treat of 1650* with slow reducing heat in a furnace, or if needing tempering, 1150* & air cool. It will machine with no problem.DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. ShopMobile UnitFinally retired*Moderator*"A man's word is his honor...without honor there is nothing.""Words are like bullets.... Reply:The only requirements for welding these two materials are dictated in your weld procedure specifications (WPS). If you don't have a WPS consult a welding engineer regarding specific application.
