Howdy Ya'llTook ya'lls advice and went and bought some 6013 and 7014 rod yesterday. I burned rod fer 6 hours praticin different joints and positions. Attached are some pics of my first vertical down butt weld. The weld in the pics was done with a lincoln 225 ac welder, 3/32 6013 rod at 90 amps on 2 pieces of angle iron. I would appreciate it if ya'll could give some advice on how it looks and if I'm doing anything wrong. Also is the 6013 rod a vertical down rod only cause when I tried a vertical up weld with it it was almost impossible to control and it ended up looking like lava out of a volcano. I'm glad I took ya'lls advice and got the 6013 and 7014 rod....I like them better than the 6011 I have been using. Thanks fer your time guys and I'll be looking forward to some constructive criticism.....Man I love to weld!!!Ya'll take it easy,Rod Attached Images
Reply:6013, 6011 and even 7014 are all position rods.  Using AC  with a small welding machine make vertical up difficult.   If you have a 225 amp machine buy some 1/8th for your downhills and set it up a bit high around 130 to 140.  You will get a nicer looking bead but what you have looks ok.  Often with a vertical down you can ride the rod on the crack of your joint as you keep it ahead of your flux.  Until you have a hundred hour practice on horizontal and flat I wouldn't bother trying vertical up.  You can try but it becomes frustrating trying to run before you can stand and walk.
Reply:6011 a good choice with one of these machines I think.  6013 I think it best for use on the thinner stuff.  As lotech says, just keep practicing.  You'll get the hang of it.  With sstick your rod gap to the plate is pretty important.  On something like  a 6013 you can usually drag a 6013 without problems.  The 6011 needs a gap of like a 1/16".  Usually with 6011 you whip it, the forward whipping action is to preheat while the backstep is for the deposit.  Works well on thick stuff, dirty, painted on, and if your good you can use it on sheet steel as well.  Good luck.CHRIS
Reply:Thanks for the eval lotech and Chris...I really appreciate it. Like you recommended lotech I think I'll wait to try vertical up after I get alot more hood time. Chris, when you where mentioning whipping 6011 do you increase the arc length while yer whipping to preheat or do you keep it at 1/16"? I think I'll take your advice and give the 6011 another shot...I want to learn to be able to control the rod and arc and not drag the rod like you do with 6013.Thanks again Guys,Rod
Reply:I personally incase my arc length as this prevents much deposition of metal and yet still preheats and if necessary burns off rust, paint, whatever.  I think, because I do it by practice not be theory, I think it gets to around a 1/8" to 3/16" of a gap somewhere in there.  6013 is still a good rod, dont get me wrong.  7014 is a general all purpose rod.  Its rarely used by professional welders.  These rods are easy to use and all, and theres really not anything wrong with using them, but professional welders ususlly run rods like the 6011, 6013 and the 7018.  6010 is also used, being its just like a 6011 but must be run on DC electrode positive.  6011 can still be run on AC so its a choice rod for you.  Anyway,  I hope this helps you.  The 6011 doesnt give the pretty weld appearance you get with the 7018, 6013, 7014 ect.  Its a more rugged look.  However, penetration is awesome on this rod.  Alos, slag is pretty light, though hard to remove.   Hope this helps.CHRIS
Reply:i am a 6010 7018 person myself
Reply:Yeah for the record I like the 6010 and 7018 myself, but 6010 wont run on ac, thats what the 6011 really shines through on.  And a 6011 generally gives a slightly less forceful arc and isnt quite so prone to arc'n out.  But I think you get used to what you started out on and have down pat.  As for 6013, I still use them on thin stuff.  6010 can do it, but with its more forceful arc it isnt as forgiving.  Thats just me good luck y'allCHRIS
Reply:Chris, I'm going to run some 6011 tomorrow and wanted to ask whats the proper electrode angle to hold...is it 90, 45 degrees?? I have a tendency to drop my rod down to about 30 degrees but I'm workin on fixin that, I just need to know whats the best angle that I should shoot fer?Take it easy,Rod
Reply:start it out around 45 and then whip close to 90, but not quite.    30 is a little low,  but thats ok, youll get the hang of it.  If you can learn to fix them Navy jets you can get this welding thing under control I guarantee.  Good luck  have some fun with it.CHRIS
Reply:Rod, sorry to hijack your thread. Guys can you clearly in very simple layman terms describe the whip and pause technique for me please. I use mostly 6013 so I've never had the chance to get to grips with it.
Reply:Well you start out with an established puddle, then you make a quick whippin forward action which will increase your arc gap slightly, instead of 1/16" to maybe 3/32" or 1/8".   This action allows for preheats as well as it kinda burns away any impurities on the steel.    THen you bring the rod back to the leading edge of the puddle and let it pause to deposit, then you whip out ahead, burn away, and bring back to the leading edge of the puddle to deposit the metal.  Does this help?Good luck guysCHRIS
Reply:Very clear and concise - I can picture it which helps a lot. Thanx, Chris.
Reply:Good, sometimes I think when I talk people just have this blank glazed stare at me lol....sometimes after rereading what I write I get that and im like whoa. lol  Glad to be of helpCHRIS
Reply:Dont worry Chris....I get the blank stares from people all the time....especially when my southern drawl comes out...lol...anyway thanks again fer the info...I will definitely be tryin that tomorrow before I go to work. Hopefully i can stack some dimes!Over and out,Rod
Reply:Rod,  I know where you are, but where ya from?  Dont break yourself on stacking dimes, may look more like susan b anthony's  hehe.  6011 tends to be spread out a tad more than on 7018, 6013 and 7014.  but they can still look uniform though and they will be pretty sharp looking.  really looking for that.  seems if you can keep 6011 uniform it really makes the differnce in looks.  but you know them are strong as heck though either way.   good luck chris
