I am still years away from needing much in the way of a portable welder but when your snowed/iced in you can do lots of thinking.Bobcats appear to be obtainable in the $2000-$2500 range used for the 225. Now as I've been reading up on the issue more many folks are commenting on how they really aren't that great of stick welders and really just a generator that welds. So my question is since I've already got a maxstar would it not just be a much better financial decision to buy a very nice Generator only that has plenty of power for the maxstar and not worrying about one day trying to pickup a bobcat?Finding 10k watt generators in the $1k range plus the $450 I've got in my maxstar leaves me way under the money unless the bobcat will do something this combo wouldn't...
Reply:That's what I did. I have a Dynasty 200 and a Passport that I use with a portable 8.5KW generator for fence building and repair on my place. I can get them into places that it would not be possible to get a Bobcat.
Reply:Myself as well. I have a Dynasty 200dx and generator. What made me decide against an engine drive welder is that you cannot plug one into the wall socket, and I didn't want to fire up an engine drive everytime I needed to weld in my garage workshop. I don't think the neighbours would have let me anyways.
Reply:There was actually a thread about this, cant remember Member name. He got a 5500 or 7000KW Genny, and used it for a while and posted his thoughts...The Benefit of the Bobcat is the large Genny, AC and DC and hulking duty cycle over the Maxstar. Im assuming the Maxstar has the Auto-Link, so its better on 240v.. but still doesnt burn 6010 right, if thats issue for you....Was for me..Lincoln Power MIG 210 MP ( boat anchor )Lincoln Weld-Pac 100 HDHobart IronMan 230Cutmaster 42Jackson NexGenSumner Ultra ClampsDWM120
Reply:Ive owned both a bobcat and a maxstar 150, Id pick the bobcat. better duty cycle. Just my opinion though. I will say this on a side note: I put my trailblazer in my truck yesterday to give me some weight for the blizzard here in chicago, and I wanted to do some welding in the garage today and that sucker jumped right on first crank. Not that It shouldnt but I am continually impressed with both my old 98' bobcat onan and my 09 trailblazer kohler and the fact that they NEVER flinch. |
