This is a 12 feet gate we did last month. I made it harder than necessary. Since I have a guy working for me now I get to do that.I made the hinges and turn buckle while he welded the panels. I did not install the opener. Order of photos1st is the turnbuckle construction. The tubing is 3/4" black pipe2 is the hinge construction. Hint: always install barrel hinges with pin up. Prevents the cup from filling with water.3rd is the gateLast edited by tapwelder; 04-10-2008 at 01:06 AM.

Reply:Cool that you can make your own hinges. But is it worth it? I buy them from my local welding supply chain. They come with brass bushings though, not bearings.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:Thanks guysI hate ordering 1's and 2's stuff. I usually stock some small barrels hinges from King. The were too small for this project. Locally, for that size hinge I would have paid $60. Many top quality barrel hinges have a pressed in pin. Often Stainless steel pins and one bearing and a grease fitting. Making them that way would that way you only drill two holes and insert a pin and ball. I turned the pin down and added a ball bearing and cassette bearing which took longer, but not cost prohibitive for just 2. I usually make my large barrel hinges.Joker I considered bronze, I have a lot of the stuff from another project. I wasn't sure how much maintenance would be required though.Last edited by tapwelder; 04-10-2008 at 01:41 PM.
Reply:Nice work, that gate looks even better with the two Bowties behind it!
Reply:One of the local supply stores around here has really nice bearing hinges for about $25 a set The get their stuff from Indital. I have used them on some large gates made out of 3" Sq tubing 14 gauge with a really elaborate design with some 16 gauge sheet (2 sheets 4'x8') amd some solid 1/2 sq. and they are still holding up like new 2 years later.

Reply:Yea, sunline, I was wondering the same thing. Kinda kills the nice lines of the gate.
Reply:The truss and turnbuckle keep the gate from sagging. There isn't much girth there. It sagged about 2 inch. The drive is also pitch up hill toward the latch end. The truss also allow some adjustment for that with out raising the gate on the hinges super high.
Reply:how much does a project like that cost if you don't mind me asking?i'm just curious
Reply:Beyond me lol. I used to help build gates like this with a buddy, but I was NOT on the design end, I was more "parts fetcher/painter guy". I was always impressed with the logistics of them. Nice work .Have a Jeep Cherokee? Click Here! |
