I needed this spindle for a trailer.  Its been around for a while, so I got new bearings. When the bearings cooled, they almost fell out.Pulsed spray mig, .035 wire 350 ipm, AG8.Anything....Stick, Mig,........DavidEdit,  Yeah, I welded over the rust!Last edited by David R; 04-22-2008 at 08:58 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Neat! I read about doing that but never seen it done. I guess it goes with out saying that you have to becareful to only weld on the race.
Reply:I haven't welded a race to the hub yet.....Been doin  it for years.  David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Great trick David. Too bad I couldn't have used that to remove the unit bearing from my AAM 925 on the dually last weekend!Patriot Performance AutoLincoln Power Mig 255CLincoln AC-225 StickVictor Journeyman O/AQuincy QT-5 Compressor

Reply:You can also drop in the new ones by cooling them with co2 from an inverted cylinder. They expand quickly though; so if a large cup bounces (shut up!) when dropped in, it can expand out of place and be a pain to seat home.

Reply:Never thought of that! Just passed on a bunch of spary cans of Super cold (nitrogen?) used to cool electrical boards for soldering. That would have been a good use.

Reply:Propane works to chill races and quickly. Use a short hose and turn the tank upside down to get liquid. Doesn't take but a minute. Always do this outside and it helps if you have a little wind to disperse the gas. No problem here as the wind is always blowing. It is a way to do it on the jobsite. Around the house I just put them in the freezer for a hour or two.
Reply:I used to use this TIG trick to remove valve seats in aluminum cylinder heads.  You don't really have to go all of the way around to drop them out of aluminum.  The interference fit is about .007" so they are much harder to put in.  I put them back in with a pneumatic chisel gun setup with a custom made bearing seat and pilot turned to the valve guide size.  Then I put the seats on dry ice for a few minutes to shrink them.  I heat the head under a soft brush torch or better yet, in an oven to melt a 400* tempstick.  Use gloves to mount the cold seat on mandrel and carefully slide the pilot in the guide, pointing in the upward position so you don't drop the seat, but place it.  Align in the seat to the pocket and ZAP, it's in.After the head completely cools to room temp, use a .002" feeler gauge and check under it to ensure it seated properly.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene

Reply:We would that to cylinder heads like rick said, but we also would do that with aluminum blocks to get the sleeves out somewhat easier, they were getting smashed for scrap and the sleeves were always a pain.Yup
Reply:Very cool trick Dave. I never thought or even seen that done. I know I will use it soon as I run into this quite often.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.

Reply:Seems I never get those like that. I always get the ones on the shafts, lol.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:Jolly Roger-  Just cut those across the race in one place with a carbide disk and die grinder as thin as possible and finish it with a hammer and chisel.  It'll pop right off once the stress is relieved.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
Reply:Jolly roger, the ones on the outside of the shaft, I heat till glowing red and hit em with the peen end of he hammer.  They expand and fall right off.  I trashed too many shafts using a torch.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:David, I cut them off shafts with a torch. There is a little trick to it but you will not damage the shaft. I usually cut both sides and they just fall off. If I could post a picture I would show you how I do it and I gurantee you won't hurt the shaft.  Jolly Roger was just joking. He knows how to do it.
Reply:If you cut them off a shaft when the shaft is still hot, you will cut into the shaft, but if you wait untill it is cold, and just preheat the race and cut it, there is less chance of wrecking the shaft.Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
