I've got a welding test tomorrow, pipe welding, I'm fairly competent using stick in the overhead and vertical position but any tips, advice or techniques on pipe welding would be much appreciated.  I'm assuming it will be mild steel, 100mm/150mm dia and 4mm/6mm wall thickness.  I've never tried pipe welding with MIG any special techniques requied here? The weld test won't be subjected to NDT or to be certified. As I said any suggestions gratefully recieved.

Reply:you want to know what 6 g is...well its where you take a pipe tahts layin horizontal, the actual pipe lays horizontal.   then you kick it up on a forty five degree angle.   so your weld is like half way between 2G and 5G position.   Does this help partner?CHRIS
Reply:Also on the 6G test you will have a chill ring to burn into and a 37 1/2 degree bevel with about a 1/16 landing. The piece will be set at a 45degree angle. Usually a 5 P stringer pass, then a filler pass and then capped out. Make sure as you put your stringer pass in to check the inside of the pipe, on the chill ring to make sure your getting full penatration.
Reply:6G pipe test-pipe coupons beveled 371/2 degrees, tack together [[4 good tacks]12,6.3.9 oclock positions.clean tacks up real well, feather with grinder.coupon is to be kept at a 45 degree angle during all welding. If you have never welded a pipe coupon like this,it will be an experience.take your time ,clean all welds ,and lay in a really good root pass,as it will be visually checked also, any grapes hanging is a sure fire way to fail it.run all stringer beads,no weaveing.1/8 inch 6010 for root and 3/32 -7018 cap and fill is what i used.some like 3/32 6010 for the root pass.gap coupons at 3/32 inch apart and leave about a 1/16 land on bevel so 6010 will have a little metal to work with.if you bevel and leave a razor edge, burnthru on root [blowout] is more likely.GOOD LUCK,hope this helps
Reply:goremr,i had to take my test in the 6G position with an open root.sch 80 -8 inch pipe-i have never used chill rings, sounds like they would help out at times.
Reply:Doing a 6G is not exactly a walk in the park.  Your root pass has to tie in to both lands of the weld joint.  It must not protrude into the pipe more than a sixteeth and it should not show any signs of being below the surface of the inside of the pipe when inspected.  I never met anyone who could pass a 6G pipe on the first try if they had never seen one done before.  That's a stretch.  I haven't done one since the eighties and I would not even try to do a test until I had practiced for around forty hours.  Anyone who is doing these on a regular basis has a nice set of hand skills in his pocket.... Big dollar hand skills.
Reply:What I like to do is.. set the gap at 1/8 with a feathered landing, run the first two 1/4s with 1/8 and the gap will close up on the last to quarthers so I switch over to 3/32 and do the last two quarthers, let it cool a little, and run 7018/-3/32 for the hot pass, just don't run the hot pass to hot because it will suck the root in and you will be busted, and the cap is a walk in the park    if you can tig the root in thats the best way to go for sure. The fitter can see the root going in and make sure you are getting the root deep enough so you won't suck the root in on hot pass. I wouldn't try to take a pipe test with a wire feeder.....
Reply:If you can TIG it remember to have the wire on the inside at the bottom and just outside at the top, (if that makes sense) and remember your water line.
