I was wondering if anyone knew what the maximum acceptable length of Incomplete Fusion permitted by AWS D1.1. I am looking in the acceptance criteria sections and cannot find the area that specifically addresses this. Thanks in advance,Jellopool
Reply:I hope your kidding, but if your not, incomplete fusion is a failure (discontinuety) that needs to be repaired.
Reply:i recall that a maximum total of 3/8" dia of inclusions was acceptable...?
Reply:With regard to IF (incomplete fusion) it is most certainly a discontinuity. Is it a relevant or non-relevant indication and under which code, standard or spec does it become a defect is the question I was trying to ask.  I am interested to know if AWS D1.1 has no tolerance for IF or if some IF was permitted under this code book specifically MT/PT acceptance criteria.  Maybe it is hidden under Table 6.1 but I can not find it?Thanks,Jellopool
Reply:Looking at table 6.1 part (2) it says:Weld/Base Metal Fusion  Through fusion shall exist between adjacent layers of weld metal and between weld metal and base metal. So through my interpretation no LOF is acceptable.Thats on page 218 in the 18th edition.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:Thank you so much for the response.  That answers my question completely.  I really appreciate it!Regards,Jellopool
Reply:No problem, now that I think back to it I do remember being told when I tested for my D1.1 that no LOF was acceptable.  Suckup on the root was ok up to 1/16" but that was it.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:Again, many thanks...Jellopool
