Well, I bought a Hobart Handler 140 about a week ago. I dont have any steel to mess with yet because Ive been really busy. I found a real thick peice of steel and decided to weld it. This is only about my 5th or 6th weld ever, I dont think its half bad. Its flux core, turned the heat up all the way and went at it taking my time. Hit it with a wire wheel and BAM, heres what I get.Any suggestions?
Reply:Looks pretty remarkable for your 5th or 6th time!  Keep it up!Miller Syncrowave 200MillerMatic 180 AutoSetHobart Airforce 500iVictor O/A (80cf)
Reply:Right on, Its those kind of beginner welds that will get you hooked on it.OOOHHHH- you got the vice jaws
Reply:Good job, looks like good penetration on both pieces and a smooth/consistent hand motion....your a natural! If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:Yeah looks great for a first weld (5th or 6th time with a torch in your hand) keep it up as I know your hooked now.Keep us posted with the progress remember lots of pictures.Miller Thunderbolt 225Millermatic 130 XPLincoln HD 100 Forney C-5bt Arc welderPlasma Cutter Gianteach Cut40ACent Machinery Bandsaw Cent Machinery 16Speed Drill PressChicago Electric 130amp tig/90 ArcHobart 190 Mig spoolgun ready

Reply:Thanks everybody, yes those are vice jaws, for some reason I have another set floating around. I think the reason it looks so good is because I took my time and really tryed. But I absolutely love welding now and am just completely hooked. I need to buy some steel and get to working building stuff for the Jeep. Here it is if anyone is interested.
Reply:that looks better than my first welds. lol. keep it up. from this angle, it looks like you may want to turn your wire up just a little. the weld bead looks slightly concave from my perspective. just my opinion tho.Later,Andy
Reply:It looks pretty darn good to me. It looks like your going to need a brush gaurd on the front of that jeep, maybe a rack on top and a spare tire holder. Keep it up.
Reply:The bead looks pretty uniform, but it also appears to be a bit cold, which probably resulted in not much penetration, due to the thickness of the metal pieces that you welded.  Welding pieces of that thickness usually requires more amps to accomplish satisfactory results.  Of course it always depends on meeting the demands of the work, whether you are just tacking stuff together, or building structurally sound projects.  Will look forward to seeing some examples of your welding 1/8" or 3/16" stuff.  You should get the expected penetration on the thinner metal.  Also, experiment with a weave motion to keep the heat concentrated longer in the area to get a stronger weld.  Weaving works well on thicker metal.Last edited by Weldordie; 05-14-2008 at 12:35 AM.
Reply:looks like the metal got hotter towwrds the end and tied in better / flatter
Reply:I like it!..But as stated..Try some thinner stuff..Clean it first then blast away!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
