Reply:Nice job. Looks like you really thought things out. What gauge steel did you use? Can you give any details on your design?
Reply:Those are quite elaborate. Are they meant for working on the vehicle or storage or...?City of L.A. Reply:recker-saw something like these online and went from there. main frame is all 3"x3"x1/4" angle and crossbars are 1"x1"x1/4" angle. diagonal braces are1/4x2 flatbar.  plenty heavy, could have probably made lighter.have couple large casters that can slip in pockets to move around. the main frame is 12' long. approach ramps 8' long and can be used by themselves to just raise front of car.  i have 3 small (low) cars and can set up under them to work on. ramps are 30" tall. there is a 2"x2" cross bar after you drive car up you slid floor jack under and jack and it raises the back end up. i made the  approach ramps an inch wider so you can spin them around and slide under main ramps.any other questions just give a shout.
Reply:tanglediver-work mostly, but storage also. idrove my heavyest rig up on and shook the max all around and didn't have any movement. i may have been overkill on steel but don't have to move around much. also all 4 crossmembers can be unbolted if wanted to take up less room or move easyer, but thats not aproblem for me.
Reply:Nice Sunbeam!! You got a 289 in it???DanMy instructor said someone will catch on fire during class...He wasn't joking!!
Reply:great idea. I have to ask though, what is holding the approach ramps under the stand? Also do you think it will hold 3400-3500LB?
Reply:xcc-no 289 , it is a very clear rust free car with 34k original miles on it, original paint and too nice to modify. don't see many here in alaskaandy- i don't have any thing holding ramps under yet. would be very easy to drill a couple holes and have it so you can bolt or pin them together when they are under ramps . will do soon. not much down pressure on back end of ramps, but can't be too safe. the design i copyed looked to be much lighter angle and had no diagonal bracing and fewer cross braces. i wouldn't be to worried with 34-35k pounds, not sure.  heavyest i've had on it is toyota pickup and bmw z3. not sure would guess they are both around 3000 lbs. have about $500 in steel in them. sure beets flat on your back on a creeper and jack stands! thanks
Reply:misquoted in my description, the main frame is 1/4" x 2". but you could make it out of larger, heavyer for more strength.

Reply:sun-fairbanks. does your welding bring you up here ? working on the north slope ?
Reply:Do you use a jack to lift up the back to put the ramps under or can you just tip it forward to level it out?
Reply:No, dont make fairbanks; get around to the slope at prudhoe bay delivering fuel. Run a tugboat for redstack...Airco 300 squarewaveMig welding center...Powcon sm300/LN 25Powcon sm200/PD lHypertherm PM 1100Miller AEAD 200LE W/LN25 FCand now another sm200 pd l combo.
Reply:antibling- you jack up on the 2x2 square tubing.floor jack woks great.  weight does not end up front of center so it does take a little jacking, but not much. could use jack stands instead of reversing ramps also.  you can still scoot under tubing but could also unbolt if you had lots of time to spend under rig.sun - spent many years sloping, can't say i miss the place. good money though and neat place to seeanybody serious about building one of these email me and i'll give you much more helpfull info. thanks  dan    [email protected]

Reply:chopper- my z3 is 6" off  ground at 30" forward of front tire centerline and have no clearance problems

Reply:Great idea. Looks good and like it works well.  Thanks for sharing. Maine Welding Company & Wrought Iron Powered by Custom Web Development
Reply:i'm guessing if you experimented with some counterweights welded to the front you could get it to where as the car slowly got in final position, it would tip forward and level by itself..thenopen door  jump down and shove the approach ramps under it.
Reply:nope. if you look close you will see a 2x2 tubing that you slide floor jack under once you have driven car up and jack up to level car up, easy and controlled. saw something like this on net, kind of like you discribe , that would go over forward by itself after you drove car up and it looked very scarey, like the car might bounce off when it goes over center and levels by it self. much better controlling that part of it. work great!
