So my buddy has an old chebby. It was at ONE time an RV. You know where they buy just the chassis and cab from the factory then manufacture the living quarters onto the back half of the truck?Ok, well, this guy got the truck minus the RV part. So the rear half of the chassis was Reaaalllly long for a truck. He clipped the frame rails and now it looks like a shortbed still without the bed. He is a peculiar guy...anyhow, he wanted to replace the cab mounts with urethane ones. Problem is that the front and middle ones are replaceable rubber. The REAR ones are not available. They are kinda like chevy motor mounts, the rubber is sandwiched between two metal brackets. The rubber is part of the brackets and the brackets are buck riveted to the frame. Chevy says the mounts are part of the frame and not available.I took the mounts out, cut the rubber with a sawzall, torched off the leftover bonded rubber. Cut out 1-1/4 inch square tubing of the .120" variety, placed the mounts in a misaligned fashion so as to leave room for a donut urethane body mount and tacked it up. He double checked the fit and I welded it up with my little Lincoln Migger. It looks almost factory if I cap the ends. Well, it was hot here in Yuma, AZ that day and he is not used to the heat. He was vomiting something fierce and totaled my restroom. My wife was not happy. He left in a hurry before I could get both sides done and before primer and paint. He also left before I got pictures.....so pictures will come as soon as I get to the other side of the cab.Oh snap. You read all that with no pictures....sorry guys.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain

Reply:Denrep,No cuts to the cab were required. Funny thing....there was a back wall in this cab. I thought they cut the wall out so the driver could park and just climb into the camper without exiting the truck. This one has the gas tank in the cab behind the bench seat.Lots of weird stuff about this thing. It had a two speed rear end at one time. Now that I have the method down. I will take complete pics of start to finish when I do the other side.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain

Reply:Ok, here are the  pictures of the weld on the mount. I will put more pics in here as I go.I think the welds are ok. not my best, but sure as heck not my worst! hahaI knew someone would gripe if I cleaned it up first, so you can see the brown stuff on the edges of the weld that always seems to come with Mig welding on dirty stuff. I did clean with acetone, but I didn't get the whole thing clean of the grime that was on on it. Reply:next in the series....You will see that the bolt we had was too long. We shimmed with washers until he can get a shorter bolt. This got him home though. So basically, what we did was eliminate the rubber between the two steel mounts. Welded the steel together and put in a rubber between the mount and the truck cab. Reply:Man you let him go with about $3 in washers.Looks good though. Those bushings look like old Ford motor mounts. I like to use those on just about anything I can.Lincoln PowerMIG 215XTLincoln Precision TIG 225Hypertherm 300
Reply:He should be happy and good to go now. I've always wondered how the manufacturer bonds the steel and rubber. With heat or solvents?
Reply:Sandy, They put the two metal parts into a mold and pour the liquid rubber into the mold. Once it cures they can remove it and there you have it. The metal had holes in it for the rubber to flow through and to form a mechanical bond in addition to the chemical bond. Much like plaster and lathe walls. It was a biotch to get the rubber off the mounts. Huge mess. Twisted Minis, yeah, probably about that much in washers if not more. But the beauty is that he paid for all of it beforehand. Also, the rubbers are from a body mount kit he bought in advance. They were made for a newer model truck of the same design. Not ford parts. he would rather walk home than put ford parts on his chevy, as would I.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:Denrep,This is a picture of why it isn't an available part. The factory bucked the rivets so you can't take off the mounts as an everyday joe. Not that it takes a lot to go to HF and pick up an air chisel.....but it does take some time. Reply:Just a couple more:Attachment 19716Attachment 19717Maybe that was a "P" chassis with a "C" cab mounted??Joker 11, your fabricated mount nearly mirrored the OE design!Last edited by denrep; 10-19-2010 at 11:34 PM.
Reply:Denrep,I notice that your yellow truck must be a 64 or later, right? The 63 had the notched doors where the windshield wrapped around, if I am correct.Anyhow, my buddies truck was definitely oddball. It was also 4wheel drive. I notice your yellow truck had the trailing arms and coil springs in the rear while my buddies was leaf sprung.Fun stuff with these old trucks.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:Right Joker11, '60- '63 had wraparound windshields. To be clear, none of the pictured trucks belong to me. I stopped at a car show just after you had posted, and I looked at a bunch of trucks to satisfy my curiosity about the cab mount. The thread cooled down before I got around to posting the pics.GM tried so much "high strangeness" with the trucks, that no variation would surprise me: Torsion bars, coils, leafs, combined clutch and brake cylinder, 9' box, drive shafts without slips, three door suburbans... V-6 engine, and even gasoline V-12 in the heavies. One more for the road:Attachment 19720Last edited by denrep; 10-19-2010 at 11:34 PM.
Reply:Yep, that would be the beast! His registration slip calls it a Fleetwood. I guess that was the maker of the RV that used the P Chassis. So when he gets pulled over the police think it is a fake registration because they are thinking Cadillac Fleetwood or something.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:Joker11 - Just like a Chevy truck, we can squeeze a few more miles out of a worn out old thread! Besides, I know that the people want to get to the bottom of this cab mount thing. All those pretty trucks, we should also look at the rest of the spectrum! There has been a miracle of sorts... Those trucks and us made it to see $4 gasoline! I figured that was good reason to celebrate, by visiting an 'ol buddy who I burned a lot of gasoline with! I called him... He'll drop everything for a chance to show-n-tell old trucks. Said he had plenty of old Chevy cab mounts to look at! He also said he could use a break -besides his other leg- and would be more than happy to host a field trip through his monument to 29 cent gasoline! But he reminded me that Doc ordered that he use a cane, and stay only on "firm surfaces" while his broken leg heals. He's a trooper though, and definitely wanted the show to go on!Gather round for the cab mount tour:We took the "express". That's when stops are  limited to only the most promising yard sales!Attachment 19764Our guide uses a scout car to takes us out to the bush:Attachment 19765Then the walking tour begins. Gotta cross over the great barrier to get at the good stuff:Attachment 19768As ordered - Walk restricted to "firm surfaces" only! Attachment 19766This is the last truck to cross, before reaching the mother-load of cab mounts!Attachment 19767Cab mount safari continued next post...Last edited by denrep; 10-19-2010 at 11:34 PM.
