..Hey guys, not sure if this is the right forum but it is about some shelter for doing my outdoor boat and welding work.. So here we go....I've got a concrete pad beside my house that could support up to a 20' x 25' structure. I need shade in the summer and shelter from the wind to do my work. Portability is a concern as I'm not absolutely sure we're staying here forever is why I'm not just going with a stick-built lean-to. So I'm figuring on one of those metal garage/carport type structures. Did a Google search and got over-whelmed with fine glossy websites that looked like pure sales-pitch BS. So I'm looking to you guys to see what y'all's experience with them has been and what suggestions you may have concerning what to look for in a quality structure. ..If I could push my luck and have my d'ruthers I'd like something with enough beef to maybe have some overhead lift capability. Prolly <2500#s or so. But I ain't holdin my breath on that one. ..Anyways, if ya have some useful input I'd really appreciate it..  TIA..  d:^)  Schneeks..ESAB 161 LTSCommunicate & adapt, diggit.?ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ
Reply:My vote is for a wood framed metal skin building - cost effective and with 6x6 posts you get significant vertical support.  I just built a 24x24 framed steel skin building - while kit with everything including shipping (from Ohio to Virginia) and concrete was $4995Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year
Reply:gwiley- Sounds nice.. Got any idea how much just the building cost was.?  How much trouble would it be to move if you needed to.?  Thanks..    d:^)  Schneeks..ESAB 161 LTSCommunicate & adapt, diggit.?ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ
Reply:If you are renting your house portability may make sense, but wouldn't the building increase the value of your property enough to cover your cost of the building plus your labour to construct it? Try to make someone pay for your labour and stress.A man who can't weld is as poorly educated as a woman who can't sew
Reply:I have built three steel buildings, two 30x40s and one 40x60.  One 30x40 was a bolt-up, and the others were welded.  Around here in central TX you can buy the steel in kit form for $7.00/sq ft with two openings for garage and walk thru doors + doors.  You do all the cutting and welding.  The bolt ups run abput $9.50/sq ft.  The weld-ups go up very quickly.  On the other hand your area may require building to specific codes which affect pricing.  The one boltup I built was in OH and I had to have numerous inspections for code, approved site plans @$750 and engineering stamped plans.  In rural TX little of that is required and a permit is only $79.The overhead lift capability is not a biggy and it you have to build to code to meed certain wind and snow loads, you may already have the structure. This probably isn't much help but if it were me and I could weld, I would put up a steel weld up structure.  Cheaper and far stronger.  Steve
Reply:A shed/garage/ carport 20X25 feet is not going to be very portable no matter how you build it.You say you are building a boat or you have an existing boat?I would keep the boat thing separate from a welding shop. The design considerations for falling snow or tree limbs is going to be different than for dry hot climates so if you move to another place I would think about that as well.Small metal sheds are noisy in the wind. A wood building is quiet and has some insulation value even with out the insulation. We need more info.As far as the websites selling small buildings what did you expect?Do you need a permit?AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder

Reply:OK.. I'll clarify a few things to mebbe help. Snow really isn't a problem around here. Very rarely do we get much snow on the Southern NC coast. That said, we do occasionally get hurricanes. So tie-downs and wind resistance must be proper. I'm "renting-to-own" from a friend who had to move out of the state. We really wanna stay here but chit happens. And if I havfta move I'd like the option of disassembling the bldg and taking it with. We hauled my current shop over here on a rollback. Wasn't very graceful but worked. Far as mixing welding and boats, a lot of the stuff I wanna weld is for the boats. Some of it's on the boats. If there's a danger of them getting sparked on or some such I can always roll the boat out from under the cover. I work on lots of different boats and most of'em are Jons anyways. I'm not familiar with the local codes, but there is a $120 TAX(they call it a "fee") on the "priviledge" to build one of these on your property   I would think the local dealers would know what was required in their area and the paultry use I'd get from the "fee" should be to have an approved bldg for the lot. Thanks for y'all's input.!!     d:^)  Schneeks..ESAB 161 LTSCommunicate & adapt, diggit.?ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ
