anybody live in the hampton roads area, according to indded.com & the virginia state employment agency, they are looking for welders. i might check navy times about new carrier construction. but i cant think of what else it could be. any info is appriciated.
Reply:I got called from a welding company about coming to work there. They offered a whopping $23 an hour for a certified unlimited thickness fluxcore welder. I laughed at the guy when he said that. When he realized I knew what the hell I was talking about, he offered me $28 an hour to be a foreman. Still laughted at him. Reply:aluminum,Northrop Grummand (NN Shipyard) did get a contract to build another carrier. The pay may not be "the highest", but they have one of the best training programs in the welding industry. Their "Apprentice School" is highly regarded. You may want to PM "Wheelchair" on Millerwelds.com for particulars. He retired from the shipyard a few years back.My son went to work for them right out of college (Naval Architect). Advanced very rapidly and nearly doubled his pay in about two years. Was the first apprentice naval architect to ever get a carrier. Did the sea trials on the Truman. Then moved over to the research center and was working on "weight reduction" for the carriers. Three years into the shipyard, the "can't turn it down job--6 figures plus" came along and he left. Still feels the experience was great, and provided an excellent "stepping stone".He stayed in that job for about 3 more years. Went back to UNC and got his MBA. Now works for a consulting firm headquartered in Atlanta, and makes more money than any 35 year old should make.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:I told him when he gets up to $40 something call me. The guy I was talking to, was telling me he is having so much trouble trying to find good welders for the carrier project. I told him, what the heck do you expect when your offering $23 an hour. Oh and I forgot thats only if you have ship experince. If none, it was like $19 an hour.Lincoln 300 Vantage 2008300 Commander 1999SA250 1999SA200 1968Miller Syncrowave 200XMT350MPA/S-52E/xr-15Xtreme 12vs Millermatic 251 w/30A Millermatic 251 Dialarc 250 Hypertherm 1250 GEKA & Bantom Ironwokers |
