How are welds inspected?

How are welds inspected to see if they were done right?i know visually is one way, but the problem with this is that it does not always tell you if the weld is actually good.  Especially if the person doing the visual inspection is a beginner.What other ways are there?a) Specifically on round tube frame/or square tube frame race cars?b) All welds in general?

Reply:Like brucer said, phased array, x-ray, as well as dye penetrant, magnaflux(on ferrous), and visual forms of non destructive testing could be used on your project.  It matters what the inspection criteria dictates though as to it being a good or bad weld.
Reply:Sounds like the component you talk about is too thin for any form of practical UT. Manual UT < 10.0mm WT is not worthwhile where RT can be used. There have been advances in UT probes for thinner materials, however I doubt you need to be concerned with all this trouble. X-Ray is the NDE method of choice for embedded defects in thin walled tube butt welds, however this is not always possible based on some joint butt geometries, eg; T-K-Y, as the film cannot be placed correctly.For your application, I would suggest MT for CS / PT for SS and other NF materials. Also ensure good fit up and perhaps some do mock up welds you can chop up and assess via macro to determine penetration for butt, tee butt configs / root fusion for fillet welds etc.I doubt welding codes apply to your work, however I would just base things on good looking beads of correct size with no surface breaking discontinuities and mock ups to determine the internal fusion characteristics. If really important, full strength butt joints may be RT assessed. Just use a simple criteria like ASME B31.3 NFS the AWS structural spec for thin materials, (cannot recall this tho), to determine weld quality / acceptance.Cheers
