... In order to make it work with a welder regulator? If the nozzle is not compatible with a regulator, would switching it with a compatible type make the bottle un-exchangeable? Attached Images
Reply:Take it to the welding supply, they will put the right valve on it for you for a fee.
Reply:if home depot has a simular size you could exchange it there and they will never know
Reply:What kind of gas came in the cylinder, how is the cylinder marked and how / where did you get it? I'm no expert, but the fancy valve looks more like what I'd expect to be used with some more exotic gases; it appears that the top cap provides extra safety to keep the valve from accidentally opening.
Reply:I haven't bought it... yet. Guy has two 50lb cylinders for CO2; or at least that's what he says they're for. The valve didn't look right, so I thought I'd ask before putting any money out.If I change the valve, will it make the tank unexchangeable? Legally, am I allowed to buy a valve and do the swap myself?
Reply:If that is a CO2 cyl those valves might be for an automated fire supression system. As far as doing valves yourself it's not worth the hassle. Those things are screwed in TIGHT and usually use a special thread sealer that works almost like glue. When I've had a bad valve I've always had the hydro shop just instal it since I get the valves from them anyways. They have all the right tools to do the job and not F anything up. If you gouge the cyl or bugger up the valve trying to remove./instal it, it's an expensive opps. A gouged cyl is junk.If you are thinking about using those cyl for another gas, say 75/25 mig gas by swapping out the valve, you'll probably have issues exchanging the cylinders. CO2 cyl are usually rated for different specs than other inert gas cylinders and valve swaps while possible, usually get you a bastard cylinder that no one wants to F with.As far as exchange, you need to check with your supplier. Most only stock certain sizes in certain gasses. A non stock size/ gas combo will be a PITA at best. Also note that to use CO2 for mig you will need to get an adapter to use the standard mig regs, or get a reg designed to run 100% CO2..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:I have a C25 tank, but I'm looking into running straight CO2 since refills are much cheaper and provide equivalent shielding/antispatter for the amperage and application I'm running. I will need to buy gaskets and an adapter to fit my reg for using a CO2 tank. How much does your supplier charge for a new valve and to swap into your tank? Being that they're painted red, fire suppression system seems to make sense. The local welding suppliers carry 20 and 50lb tanks, so exchange shouldn't be an issue - but I will call and verify.
Reply:I agree, there is no point is buying a tank that I cannot legally have. I'm covering my bases before I ask a hundred questions

Reply:I agree on them being for fire suppression due to the red paint. Are those tamper proof type valves? I wouldnt touch em if it was me.
Reply:They're from a halon security system. Seller assumed they'd work with other gasses as well. Even if they can be modified, Their cost, plus that of fuel and changeover is making the deal less attractive.

Reply:I hadn't emailed when the thread was posted. I prefer being less than ignorant when buying anything, and this seems to be the place for sound welding and accessory advice. The tank may be compatible, but he's asking more than it's worth at this point, to me.
