Rocket engine welds!

I'm pretty sure there is something wrong with me. I went to the Space and Rocket Museum in Huntsville today with my son's 4'th grade class. All the stuff to look at and I was examining welds, even taking macro shots of them.These were mostly welds on a J-2 rocket engine. The J-2's were the engines used for the second and third stages of the Saturn 5 rockets used in the Apollo missions.The material appeared to be a 300 series SS, but could have been something more exotic. The funny looking one had been ground SMOOTH, I'm not sure what's going on there.Miller EconotigCutmaster 38Yes ma'am, that IS a screwdriver in my pocket!

Reply:No kidding carl. Don't get on the ferry down here and look at them either. I look at welds on everything. I guess it's just habit now.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:I like to look at about anything man has dreamed up and built, whatever it is. I look at welds all the time. I've been through the Space mueseum at Alamogordo, NM and found that a great way to spend half a day. Also got a private guided tour of Kitt Peak in Arizona a few years ago. Got to see several small telescopes and got a top to bottom tour of the big telescope. They have a big machine and welding shop in the bottom of it. There are a BUNCH of welds in that thing.

Reply:I went to the arch in St louis and my wife wanted to know what I could possibly be taking a picture of that close to the thing.  Unfortunately the pics didn't turn out.
