The tunsgten with the red stripe is slightly radioactive so what extra care should be taken when grinding the point? Radioactive can't be good so should I just ditch the 3 electrodes I have and get some other ones? I read up a bit on http://www.aglevtech.com/About_Tungsten_Electrodes.html. I am new to tig so may be doing quite a bit of sharpening for a while. I am working with mild steel at 1/8 and under for now. Thanks, ChadLast edited by chadr; 11-15-2005 at 12:19 AM.
Reply:I wouldn't be too worried about it. You're doing more harm to your body if you weld without using a respirator....
Reply:We have a good article on our site about grinding tungsten(tip geometry and the like)http://www.arc-zone.com/catalog/web_....html&cart_id=Also, if you're concerned about safety, http://aws.org/technical/facts/Article No. 27 has info on thoriated tungsten electrodes. We generally recommend that if you don't have to use, that is to say its not in a specification, then why bother when there are safer alternatives available. Hope that Helps!--Carmen Electrode , www.Arc-Zone.com |
