Hey all new here I'm on lawn site and all but anyway.......I go to a agricultural school and have a welding class..  we got a extra credit assignment, we have to write a paper 2-3 pages on a topic of welding we did not study over the semester. i have chosen tube and pipe/pipeline welding. DO any of u know a good website i can cruse about and get help on this or feel free to post anything u want about it. THANK YOU GUYS
Reply:try   www.firstratefabricators.com  Hes a pipeliner I know and he does darn good stuff.  Its a start.  Good luck though.  Take careCHRIS
Reply:good ling def a start  i was happen if theres any HOW TO or such i have no clue on how to structure this paper kinda going to be a wing it job i think.
Reply:are you a welder yourself?do you have any welding experience  figuring how you want to structure this comes more than anything based on what story you want to tell  Do you want to say pipeliners are the best welders in the trade.  Or do you want to say, when I grow up this is what I want to do.  Or are you wanting to say, this is what pipeliners do plain and simple.  IT will affect how you write based on what you are expecting to write about.   Once you get started the rest is gravyCHRIS
Reply:Here is what I would do, in brief:Introduction:Talk about the importance of pipeline welding to the industrial and commercial world.  For example...Hurricane Katrina has shown us that oil refining and pipeline transmission of finished products is vital to the national enegry market.  Disruption in this market has an impact on the lives of every citizen in the country.  Pipelines provide the basis for moving oil and other petrolium products to refineries, distribution facilities and eventually to consumers.  This reliance on pipes has led to increasing standards and improved methods for pipe welding, bla bla bla..Background:pipeline welding began as an alternative to (some other process or technology, this requires some research on your part.  Answer the questions, "what were pipes made of 100 years ago and how were they joined, what might have been some of the problems with this method...note, if there were no problems with this method, why arent we still using it?").  Talk about advancements that have been made over the last 50 or so years (maybe 25 years).  Talk about big projects like the alaska pipeline or what ever.Modern Techniques:outline the basics of modern techniques using text book and web resources, talk about positions, methods (GTAW, SMAW,  etc).  Most of this can be found on the web or in text books.  Cite appropriately.Certification:you might mention certification requirements and certification organizations and why these certifying bodies might exist and why certs might be important to quality of welding.Industries:give a more detailed overview of where pipewelding is used.  Petrolium is only one of many.  Power plants, boilers, water systems...the list is long, so, focus on a few and note that there are many others. Conclusion:You restate what you have said already, but shorter.  Pipewelding is everywhere and it's very important to our national economy.  The methods of welding have gone through changes over the past X years.  Because of the mission-critical applications it is required for, there are tough certifications involved, and certified pipewelders are employed in a multitude of industries. The end.Note:  this is just a quick outline and may not be exactly the assignment, but you get the picture.  Just structure your thoughts on paper into outline form and fill in the outline you make.  Not exciting, not pathbreaking, but you will get a good grade and learn something in the process.  Research papers are just a way to get you interested in a topic, get you to exercise your writing skills, and show you where the resources are.  But, sometimes they can have the opposite effect.  Try to stay on topic in each section, and dont jump around.  Once you are done, read it out loud.  This will help alot.  You will find mistakes and bad sentances easier.  You will also see what it's like to read and grade.  If you like what you hear, you will probably get a pretty good grade.  If your teacher has a minumum page requirement, ignore it until you are done with the first draft.  If you come up short, read it, ask yourself questions about stuff and answer them in the paper.  For example, why was electric welding such a large improvement over gas welding? or, why was it a big advancement when certian aspects of pipewelding could be automated?  the answers to both, weld in less time and improve average quality.  In the classes I teach (in economics), a good 5 page paper is worth twice as much as a bad 10 page paper.  The only thing worse than a crappy paper is a LONG CRAPPY PAPER.Good luck and post your paper if you want a critique before you turn it in.Last edited by smithboy; 11-21-2005 at 12:45 PM.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Well, after looking back, I think my suggestions may be "a bit overkill."   You might drop out the background section and just focus on the modern methods and uses of pipe welding and maybe a bit on certification as an asside.  I guess when I think research paper, I think more pages.  I bet you are glad you arent in one of my classes!!!Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:I bet you are glad you aren't in one of my classes.Amen to that smithboy
Reply:smithboy, that was a heck of a nice thing to do.   cool.
Reply:smithboy rocks !!!
Reply:Thanks guys, what can I say, I am a researcher nerd...but I am always happy to help a student.  I remember my panic attack days in school and got through it often with a little help from friends.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:See when Smith was in College, he was the guy that said,  hey guys lets have a party.  Hed make sure to get all the brew and such, and hed serve up his buddies and hed get em all drunk, then go hide in his room and study and do all the extra credit he could get his hands on.   Then the next day his buddies were soo drunk and had long since passed out they hadnt noticed smith hadnt partied with em all night and since they couldnt get outta bed till dinner time they missed class all together therefore never had realized until graduation day that smith actually even attneded class.  Now if thats not smarts I tell you what.  Trick your buddies into makin you think your just as much a partier and then ditch em to excel.  Since he always showed up for class the professor took great pleasure in challenging smith thereby making a better pupil out of him.  Now we all understand how he has become the man he is now, a econ instructor, a welder, a creator of things, and engineer of delights.  Yes college does make you a well rounded individual since he dint completely ditch his buddies while they drank. Oh smith had a good beer or two, but he knew his limits unlike hjis friends.  And that my amigos is the story of a great character.  ....   P.S.  if this is anywhere near the truth i think smith might kick my butt for plagorizim of his autobiography lol.   Happy THanksgiving y'allCHRIS
Reply:Man...Busted!!!I guess I'll have to change tactics from here on.  Chris, you done blown my cover.   Can't let nobody go messin' up that grading curve.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Smithboy   God u helped me I had so manny ideas..... I will deff post my paper and get all the criticism I can get on it. THANKS  truly
Reply:Anyone have any how to sites........  i love the pics in the first link
Reply:lmao  well smith just for that next time your in Carrollton, tex ill buy ya a beer and call us even...hehe...course I dont think youll be ready for truce quite yet lol...but I can always run you over to Billy Bob's and youll really have yourself a rootn tootn good time.  Anyway,  jggear good to hear your getting your paper going.  I hope the redshirt idea caughs a laugh.  Good luckCHRIS
Reply:how to what?  pipeweld?
Reply:ya how to pipeweld and such  any history
Reply:anyone   im going to write 2maro afternoon
Reply:well I wouldnt know where to get info like that.  Its just like any other welding I mean theres some codes andn stuff.  but its not like welding in general, its just well I mean they started welding pipe cause they had to.  Not really sure much more.  Really cant help you and I dont think theres much good sources on the web either.  electric welding started in the 20's in widespread.  Actually before treh turn of the centruy, but in widespread starting in the 20's.   I reckon it hit wiht pipe as quick as anywhere else.  but good luckCHRIS
Reply:http://www.khake.com/page89.htmlHere is a link to gobs of links on welding topics.  Just remember, research papers have sources.  Include the place you got your info, even if it's just the weblink.  If you are shooting for 3 pages, you will want to focus your thoughts.  No rambling on about anything.  Three pages will go much faster than you think.history of welding linkhttp://www.datakey.org/gawdajournal/3q05/equipment.php3When you talk about pipe welding, you probably want to stay away from the actual process, because you really dont know it...I don't really know it well, cause I dont do it.  The main thing to say is that pipe welding is among the more difficult welds to do because it requires an airtight weld able to withstand, sometimes, very high pressure.  The welds are often mission-critical (can kill if they fail) and are often subjected to X-ray examination for imperfections.  Getting the pipes ready to weld often requires beveling the edges of the pipe ends, so that the two pipes form a V when placed in the position to be welded.  Pipe welding also often requires the GTAW method and may require other methods in addition.  Briefly describe the GTAW (or TIG) method, and tell what G.T.A.W. (or TIG) stands for.  There are lots of links out there that provide info about this method.  You might have a sentance or two that differentiates this method from all the others.  The main difference is that in GTAW, the electrode does not get consumed or deposited into the weld.   In stick (SMAW) and wire fed systems (GMAW or FCAW or alternatively MIG) the electrode IS the metal being deposited.  There are bunches of other methods or hybrids of methods for welding.  Skip them.  Laser, Plasma arc, sonic, friction...none of these belong in this report.  Dont let terms get the best of you either.  Focus on TIG/GTAW (these two terms refer to the same process) and mention the others (SMAW and GMAW) only if you have room.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:good job smith,  well I reckon ill give you an add to what smith said about pipewelding,  another thing that makes it more difficult, your position ie vertical up overhead flat, ect just keeps changing.  It varies on the thickness.  The larger the pipe the easier, the smaller the tougher.  So lieka 36" pipe is easier in a respect than a smaller 2" pipe, course then ordinarily you wont see the 2" under the scrutiny of the 36" either.  But yeah,  and if you want to reference me, hehe....but yeah what smith said about using references is very true.  I used to have,  maybe somewhere a book on how to reference with internet addresses and the such.  You might google something about siting references on the internet.  Might help.  Anyway, just a thought.CHRIS
Reply:oh,  I forgot one more thing, you might look up STT or suface tension soemthing  anyway, its a wirefeed welding that is really getting goign on the pipeline.  You want some history, well this is history being made.  Historically all pipewelding was done with stick.  Now they are introducting wire feed applications for speed, and the STT process is at the top of the list.  Not sure exactly how it works, I havent kept up since I dnt do pipeline, but I do know its thre.  Might try lincolnelectric or millerwelds dot coms cause they have tech articals.  If you put STT in the search on their websites it should give you info, hopefully more than you need to get a glimpse of STT and how it will affect pipeline welding.CHRIS
