As pointed out earlier...The mount for the cylinder was questionable and it was suggested that two pieces of channel be placed on either side of the mount. Problem is...The pin in the cylinder will forever be stuck in the cylinder because it's a little too wide as seen in pics (hopefully). The extra channel hangs below the existing channel by 15/16; covering about 3/8 of the cylinder's pin. What to do?Here's the previous thread.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=21567 Attached ImagesLast edited by weekender; 05-23-2008 at 04:03 PM.Reason: typo
Reply:Cut the existing 'flat' channel off and redo the mount with the doubled 'vertical' channel back-to-back running between the two existing cross rails.Cut off the existing channel mount, run back-to-back doubled cross rails where you want the cylinder to go, mount cylinder eye appropriately to doubled and beefed-up mounting point.Double-check cylinder tonnage versus weight in trailer and leverage arms.Be -very- careful about raising the loaded trailer if on a side slope.  Things can get bent and tip pretty easily.
Reply:The way you have the new channel it adds 0 strength to the part of the old channel that will bend. If you don't want to scrap the original design like MoonRise suggested, I would take out the pin and install a longer one that would go thru both side plates or drill a hole in the side plates to access the pin. The access hole looks to be about in the center of the web of the channel so should have minimal effect on the strength of the stiffening channels. The important part is to get rid of the gap between the 2 pieces where you show the dime. Weld the two together along the seam. Your current design will keep the frame from bending in but will not stop the ram from bending the channel up where it is attached. That is primarily what the new channel is for.Good luck and again nice work on the trailer.Last edited by DSW; 05-23-2008 at 07:30 PM.
Reply:Well - if it were me - I would cut out the existing channel and replace it with another cross rail just slightly behind the attachment point- and then I would install a channel brace (on edge) to the rearward cross brace right behind the attachment point, and two channel braces running forward to the cross beam ahead, spread just far enough apart to allow the pin to be removed.  You can't have enough support for that anchor.
