Reply:some more pictures from different angles.Making paterns for the 2nd side. All the steel in this sculpture was cut by hand! our flame cutter was not working at the time.
Reply:1-For transport, is this shipped in sections, then assembled??2-If it's fully welded, as a one piece, Mary-Ann, isn't there a possibility of distortion from the rigger, etc. trying to man handle the unit? I'm wholly curious as to how you guys do these items.Blackbird

Reply:I am a competitor of your boss- in fact, its quite likely we have applied to some of the same commissions- and nope, its no way to get rich. But it is fun, and there are very few other jobs in the world where somebody says- "heres a hundred grand- make whatever you want".$7500 for shipping?Man, that seems high to me- I routinely ship entire flatbeds of sculpture to various parts of the country for less- do you guys use a freight broker?I guess if its oversize, but it sure doesnt look like it, and its gotta weigh less than 40,000lbs, which is what a normal truck will carry.I know diesel has gone up a bunch lately- but the last time I shipped an equivalent sized sculpture, it was cheaper.

Reply:Thanks.Believe me, not everybody likes what I, or other artists do.And there is certainly controversy about spending public money on artworks for public buildings, parks, and streets. But I figure, if they are gonna give money, and the place to put a sculpture, to somebody, it might as well be me.Believe me, though, I have done my share of burglar bars and railings, repaired broken metal stuff from patio furniture to outboard motors, and made ordinary mundane welds on all kinds of stuff. It aint all glamor around here, thats for sure.

Reply:Nice work. I don't want to hurt feelings or anything, but the spiral is the part that impresses me the most. I do the art for fun, and weld/build just about anything that pays the bills. I know about the controversy, lmao. I actually managed to become the only artist to ever be censored at the University I graduated from. No nudity, no obscenity, just twisted someones tailfeathers with it. But then again I like doing that. Have you seen any of Ken Leap's stuff using steel and glass? Some amazing work and I am certain one of your competitors. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
